June 2020 Record Challenge Thread (The RAFFLE continues!)

Day 28 – South America, play a record that highlights music from South America

Tim Maia ‎– Racional Vol. 2 (Unoffical, 2017 Pressing)

Tim Maia is just a crazy character and his life reads as something mythical. This album was recorded during his time as a member of the Racional religion (really a cult). As part of his beliefs, he quit drugs and alcohol (not bad so far), painted all his instruments white and only wore white clothes (ok...) and would perform with his band in the middle of the night, standing in fields to attract aliens with the sound of his funky music (...and I'm out). After he discovered the founder was stealing a good chunk of donations (hundreds of thousands of pounds, if not more) Maia was so embarrassed that he quit and destroyed all the albums he could get hold of. A few made it into the wild, but for the most part these bootlegs (which I was surprised to see now average for £54!!) are the only chance we have to listen to these incredibly funky recordings on wax.

Monday (29) – It’s Party time, if you could have your life summed up or represented by one album, which album would that be?

Mmmmh, this is a difficult one. I pick Mylene Farmer "... Ainsi soit je" which I got to know being 12 years old and loved ever since. It has joyful melodies, but yet also sad and thoughtful and dark lyrics, starting with "L'horloge" based on a poem by Baudelaire. I always loved literature, by the way. I must have listened to these songs several hundred times in my life. ❤️

This is an incredibly difficult category for me. I don't like attention. I'm my own worst critic. I'm drawn to and find joy in what most would consider 'downer' music. I reckon this one from Amorica is as close as I can get to a theme song. It's also my favorite Black Crowes piece. It's a cathartic blast about wrestling with yourself while desiring nothing more in the world than to be open and protect those you love.

Also - Chris sings his ass off on this song.

I lose myself, I forget myself, sometimes I fault myself
Yes, I might fight myself but then I make amends
I freeze myself, rain on myself, ok so I stone myself
And I might even find myself but then again what happens if I do
So unzip my pride
Baby, open me up wide now, so I can show this to you
Oww, I want to shine for you
Baby I want to sparkle too
I tell ya, just like a diamond cursed
Well, you know it don't get no worse
Babe, you know that I'll save you time, your trouble now is mine
Hold me baby, hold me girl
And I will laugh with you
Laugh with you if you want me to
Roll me in your splendor
I'll envy your surrender
And show, show you victory
Well, I hate myself, doesn't everybody hate themselves
So what, I scare myself, it's alright, 'cause I tell myself
I tell myself that it's all, all in my mind
So I let the poison go, 'cause baby I always know it'll be there for me
I want to shine for you
Baby I want to sparkle too
I tell ya, just like a diamond cursed
Yeah, you know it don't get no worse
Babe, you know that I'll save you time, your trouble now is mine
Hold me baby, hold me girl
And I will laugh with you
Laugh with you if you want me to
Roll me in your splendor, I'll envy your surrender
And show, I'll show you victory

The Black Crowes - Amorica

The only bad thing about this record is the choice of cover. Not in the best taste in some's eyes and also resulted in an initial sales ban in many big box retailers. It's too bad because, in this case, The Crowes kinda got in their own way and limited exposure to what is a beautifully ambitious, organic, incredible album.
