June 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - Red (N&G's Version)

17 – The Moment I Knew- Now we’re into the Deluxe cuts. This is the first track once you get past the standard edition and it does make sense to why it was cut originally given it’s a bit reminiscent of a portion of All Too Well.

Play a Deluxe or Expanded Album

Wye Oak - Civilian / Cut All The Wires 2009-2011

Tenth anniversary edition with a bonus disc of b-side and demo goodness.

19 – Girl At Home: Given the sheer volume of Swift songs about relationships, it’s a tiny bit surprising we haven’t gotten a track of her as the potential “other woman” until this one. Maybe except Better Than Revenge but we don’t really talk about that any more right? Play your favorite pandemic album

Statistically no album got more spins for me than this one. Her star explodrd among the masses at this point too as we all wanted to embrace the melancholy.

Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher

Back from vacation. Catching up.

12 – Sad Beautiful Tragic A bit of a tough track about isolation, longing, and waiting for something that will never work out.

Play an album you really wanted to love but, for whatever reason, cannot.

Aminé - Limbo

16556849289104777748759023804413.jpg

He's a Portlandian, I get it. He's talented. But this record sounds half-baked.
Hitting the local for a few bones after I get to it in the playthrough.

13 – The Lucky One – Sharing a title with an Allison Krauss song and is one of the rare Swift songs that appears to be about someone that isn’t in her personal circle in some way. For one of my money one of her most interesting tracks for the variance if nothing else. Also, 13 is a big Swiftie "number watch" - she often releases songs, merch, album announcements, etc. on the 13th of the month.

Play an album that had (either for you or others) substantial anticipation prior to its release.

Billie Eilish - Happier Than Ever

16556869625306479830334574912827.jpg

She came into my field of view in '19 with her debut LP. When Billie announced this record last year, it definitely came as a shock to me and had me eagerly waiting for the drop. Ended up being one of my top50 from last year, although in the 41-50 range. I can see myself offloading this one in time...having a change of heart as of late on owning top40 radioplay artists in my vinyl collection long-term.

14 – Everything Has Changed The second of two duets on this album, this one with Ed Sheeran, is about that feeling of finding someone new who really rattles up your world.

Play an “new to you” discovery from 2022.

Hinako Omori - ...a journey

16556882029875914667314703210948.jpg

She has released a few singles and presented/performed some ambient collages in the past few years, but I had never heard Omori-san's music until her engrossing, bedazzling debut record from March of this year. I won't mince words, I'm an easy-to-impress listener of ambient/drone/minimal music. But, I can comfortably vouch that ...a journey is a cleansing experience. It continues to leave me entranced and comforted.
I want a Hinako Omori tour announcement NOW.

The Smile - A Light For Attracting Attention

This, like any Radiohead related project, certainly had some substantial anticipation prior to release. For me, it exceeded what I expected.

15 – Starlight I was this many days old when I learned this was about Ethel and Bobby Kennedy. Go figure right? Given she says as much in the lyrics that just proves I don’t listen to lyrics that well, so

Play an album where you don’t really listen to the lyrics

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

16556949480613953881079270961519.jpg

Don't focus on the lyrics. Instead, just submit yourself to the hazy, distorted soundscapes that were intended to ring out your eardrums.

20 – State of Grace (Acoustic Version) – Making me think of four themes for a song, rude as heck.
Play an acoustic album

For my money, the most important moments in American music. No Son House, no..............nobody. His basic style, passion and raw emotion influenced any genre you can name.

If you're unfamiliar with Al Wilson (RIP and thanks for everything) of Canned Heat and how he figures into the Son House story, now would be a great time to Google that.

Eddie often alterered the lyrics to this song. A few takes for your enjoyment...

16- Begin Again – The title pretty-indicative of what you’re getting. This is also one of the small handful of songs that still linked itself to the country world before she went full on pop.

Play an album where the artist is shifting their identity (Musically or Otherwise)

Madonna -
Ray of Light

16557095072163062062320754044779.jpg

Here, we see Madonna transitioning to an electronic/trip-hop direction. Still carries the catchiness and instant gratification from her prior work, but a palpable shift nonetheless. In addition, she connects with her spirituality here ("Shanti/Ashtangi," "Little Star," and perhaps "Sky Fits Heaven").

Boldy James & The Alchemist - The Price of Tea in China: Deluxe Edition

16557112283337094250065654050214.jpg

Two years ago had me trying many albums that others recommended in the middle of '20 and this one was mentioned frequently, particularly in the Hip Hop thread. A very worthwhile listening detour. His flow and cadence works perfectly for me. Very hype live show, too!

18 – Come Back…Be Here: The track is another one that draws on themes of other songs (distance in relationships eventually crumbling them), albeit with a very different tone to it

Play an album you gave away or sold that you then re-bought (or want to!)

Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels

16557145658699009509390954745038.jpg

Traded in my orange 1xLP repress to Musique Plastique back in '19 at their old location before I felt comfortable selling on Discogs. Bought this one last year at Mississippi Records after browsing the hip hop section, surprised that a single sealed 2xLP deluxe edition import was available in the new arrivals.

Jessie Ware - What's Your Pleasure? (The Platinum Pleasure Edition)

My #1 from '20. Still love it. Have the CD, the original 1xLP release, and this special 2xLP edition with eight extra bonus tracks, most of them are slammin' B-sides!

I got sniped on my own contest. Well done.

With that said, it’s a great excuse to bust out one of my antique store finds. I’ll write up a full thing on these this week but I’m psyched to play this one. Tommy Johnson who only recorded for a couple years but he was considered a master among blues guitarists of the era. His story is worth a quick read and he had a very cool falsetto twist to his voice. There are a handful of comps out there and if you ever happen upon a shellac with his name on it…congrats on your new car.

They moved much more to the gothic rock sound on this album from the punk genre of their previous 3 albums.

This 1 LP reissue omits Curtain Call and the live tracks that are on the original release.
