June 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - Red (N&G's Version)

12 – Sad Beautiful Tragic A bit of a tough track about isolation, longing, and waiting for something that will never work out.

Play a sad, beautiful, tragic album

Drake - Take Care

Certainly some of the vibe of this album is sad, beautiful, and tragic. One of the most intentionally emotional hip hop albums out there, at least in the way this prompt supposes.

15 – Starlight I was this many days old when I learned this was about Ethel and Bobby Kennedy. Go figure right? Given she says as much in the lyrics that just proves I don’t listen to lyrics that well, so

Play an album where you don’t really listen to the lyrics

Deafheaven - Ordinary Corrupt Human Love

I guess I listen to hear the lyrics, but I definitely can't understand most of them.

19 – Girl At Home: Given the sheer volume of Swift songs about relationships, it’s a tiny bit surprising we haven’t gotten a track of her as the potential “other woman” until this one. Maybe except Better Than Revenge but we don’t really talk about that any more right?

During the pandemic, this girl at home paid homage to her heroes via a series of cover records with a crack band providing the music. They're all a helluva lotta fun.

Let's spin this one...

Charli XCX - How I’m Feeling Now

Released in May of 2020, this album definitely helped keep me sane during quarantine. I still listen to it all of the time.

I fell way behind...stupid Covid. I didn't listen to much music all week, and I was in such a fog. Even though I am supposed to leave town next week (I guess depending on my wife's and my recovery) I will make an effort to catch up, I really like all these prompts.

So here we go....

13 – The Lucky One – Sharing a title with an Allison Krauss song and is one of the rare Swift songs that appears to be about someone that isn’t in her personal circle in some way. For one of my money one of her most interesting tracks for the variance if nothing else. Also, 13 is a big Swiftie "number watch" - she often releases songs, merch, album announcements, etc. on the 13th of the month.

Jeff Rosenstock NO DREAM
(2020 Polyvinyl)
Released without fanfare in May 2020, at the height of the first confinement, this album ended up being the soundtrack to my 2020, being there for me anytime I needed a little pick-me-up energy. Hello, friend.

17 – The Moment I Knew-
Play a Deluxe or Expanded Album

Stone Temple Pilots - Tiny Music… Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop

I was actually not a huge fan of them until this album came out. Totally underrated record, although “Sour Girl” (from No. 4) is their best song. This deluxe set is pretty nice

14 – Everything Has Changed The second of two duets on this album, this one with Ed Sheeran, is about that feeling of finding someone new who really rattles up your world.

Play an “new to you” discovery from 2022

I don't do nearly as many blind buys (or one-song-listen buys) as I did when I first re-started collecting vinyl. But this one grabbed me after listening to a track on Youtube. Glad I bought it, this has some great funky-ass grooves...it's already gotten a lot of spins this year.

18 – Come Back…Be Here:
Play an album about or that references New York

U2 - All That You Can’t Leave Behind
Song: “New York”

Got this for Fathers’ Day this morning (the kids now know some of the band’s songs because of Sing 2 and don’t acknowledge that I’ve been playing their records in the house long before that movie came out) and while I’m reading this prompt, Bono is belting out “NEW YORK, NEW YORRRRRK!!” so I guess this is what I’m choosing

16- Begin Again – The title pretty-indicative of what you’re getting. This is also one of the small handful of songs that still linked itself to the country world before she went full on pop.

Play an album where the artist is shifting their identity (Musically or Otherwise)

Sturgill Simpson - Sound & Fury

"Thanks for the country Grammy thingie. Here, have some of this."

13 – The Lucky One – Play an album that had (either for you or others) substantial anticipation prior to its release.

It's laughable now to think five years between a Tool album feels like an eternity. I met my college roommate at orientation waiting in line for our ID cards. We started talking music and she asked what was my favorite band. I said Tool and she said me too! We went to the midnight release for Lateralus, and in our college town, it seemed like we were the only two there for Tool. Sandwiched in between a bunch of hipster kids waiting in line for Weezer's green album. Shrink wrap was torn off the CD and we sat in the car right there in front of the store freaking out as the first licks of The Grudge came through the speakers. We'd go on to road trip to two A Perfect Circle and five Tool shows over the next year. Good times.

17 – The Moment I Knew- Now we’re into the Deluxe cuts. This is the first track once you get past the standard edition and it does make sense to why it was cut originally given it’s a bit reminiscent of a portion of All Too Well.

Play a Deluxe or Expanded Album

Lotsa choices, but this one grabbed my eye first.

Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People

Their first album was mainly instrumental and mostly made by just two people, but with this album they became the large, amorphous collective of Canadian indiedom that they would be for the next two decades.

A true pandemic album. I love this for a lot of reasons....

From Gillian's site:

TO OUR FRIENDS AND FANS,

For reasons better discussed in the history books, in the Spring of 2020 Gillian and I dusted off an old tape machine and did some home recording. Sometimes we bumped the microphone, sometimes the tape ran out, but in the end we captured performances of some songs we love. Five are first takes and five took a little more doing, but they all helped pass the time and held our interest in playback enough that we wanted to share them with you. We sincerely hope that you enjoy

ALL THE GOOD TIMES

– David & Gillian

Also, I'm caught up!
It's been a nice day of patio time and music. My son stayed away today because of Covid, but we're all going on a trip next week...so that makes it easier.
