January 1: Frank Sinatra

Kali Uchis "Red Moon In Venus" (2023 Interscope Records)
Was initially drawn to this record from the oracle card prompt "fly yourself to the moon of your choice", and my mood took me to the red moon in Venus of Kali Uchis. Kali Uchis' bilingual songwriting also sets a particular mood that transports to distant regions of the world.

But I appreciate the genesis love.

Gil Scott-Heron – Pieces Of A Man


The man pays tribute to Holiday and Coltrane (whom I'd be more likely to pick for a quiet evening by the fire, had I either of those things) with the song "Lady Day And John Coltrane."

January 2: Beyoncé

Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want to Turn into You

Not only does Caroline share the confident pop creativity of Beyoncé, she wrote the song "No Angel" for her (on the self-titled Beyoncé album). I played this on New Year's Eve for the last challenge thread, but it's a banger and my newest vinyl purchase, so back onto the table it goes!

Melanie opened up for Sons of Kemet when I saw them and blew the room away with her voice and remixes of classic Verve titles, including the kickoff track on this, Billie Holidays' God Bless The Child. And it's an excellent album to kick off the day.

Feather Jim Musky - Fear Fun

Josh Tillman was one of a few Indie Rockers that assisted with the songwriting on Mrs. Knowles Lemonade album. Others included Jack White, Ezra Koenig, Animal Collective, and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I spun the regular version of this in the morning, but forgot to take a picture. Now I'm almost done streaming the alternate version. Jerry gave his soul to music and although many have imitated him, none have managed to replace or replicate what he brought.

Stevie was in a pretty good band and also enjoyed solo success. Also features Tom Petty and Don Henley on a few of the tracks, two other artists that enjoyed success in a band as as solo artists.

Fun fact! There are only 5 women who had a number 1 album as both a solo artist and as a member of a band/group. They are Stevie Nicks, Beyoncé, Lauryn Hill, Janis Joplin and Gwen Stefani
