January 4: Iggy Pop

Just searched my collection for "Iggy Pop" and picked what I wanted to listen to.

This was probably my first introduction to Iggy Pop as a youth watching this movie...

Day 05: John Coltrane
John Coltrane - Sun Ship
IMG_1002.jpeg
I have only really gotten into Jazz over the past 8 years. Obviously I was familiar with Miles Davis and John Coltrane prior to diving in, they are basically the Beatles and Rolling Stones of Jazz but you never know if they will live up to the hype that surrounds them (they did) or which you will enjoy more. I am more of a Coltrane guy than a Davis guy. I couldn’t tell you why exactly. The best I can come up with is I prefer the avant garde work of Coltrane more than the avant garde works of Davis both great but Coltrane just speaks to me more.

Day 5: John Coltrane

Art Pepper
- Art Pepper + Eleven: “Modern Jazz Classics”

IMG_7947.jpeg

I decided to go with another great saxophonist today. I chose “+ Eleven” in particular because it’s in stereo (like on the card) & Art also plays tenor on this album rather than just alto & also because I like this album more than Meets the Rhythm Section.

January 5: John Coltrane

Mirroring @Hemotep 's take on Billie Holiday, going with Garcia & Co. for today's Oracle with this album being a perfect example of Jerry taking his solos, but letting others (Brent & Branford Marsalis especially) have their moments too. And no question that they followed their own truth and found beauty in the unexpected.

Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda

Was spinning this last night, may as well spin again for today’s theme. One of, if not the, greatest spiritual jazz records of all time. Definitely continues the journey John Coltrane started on A Love Supreme.

Oh and features the song “Something about John Coltrane”.

January 5: John Coltrane

As I've mentioned a few times here, I'm really not a huge jazz fan. I've made several attempts to get into it, but each time it doesn't take. In small doses, like a track or 2 on a soundtrack, it's fine. There are some styles that crossover a bit - like a lot of the Italian/European scores that get a bit funky with their jazz or some jazz rock twinge.

The first Jazz abun I bought in high school was a John Coltrane best of CD. This was pre-streaming and I did not buy it because I wanted to get into jazz or I had read about Coltrane but because I played a CD copy of Dream Syndicates Live at Raji's on repeat with "John Coltrane Stereo Blues " a particular favourite. I played ghe best of a lot and when I started back buying vinyl for some punk and indie records I soon caved in and forked over about a 100€ for the heavyweight champion boxset my local record store had on display and never regretted it.
So that's how Steve Wynn got me into Jazz and why I chose this

Ghost Funk Orchestra "A New Kind Of Love"
(2022 Karma Chief)
Since I can't spin the record who's title sounds like someone telling you they're from Saskatchewan Canada right after the dentist injects them with novacaine, I'm going with some jazz funk that follows its own truth.

Makaya McCraven - Where We Come From (CHICAGOxLONDON Mixtape)

Makaya is a modern day jazz genre bender and virtuoso. I love this album so much! Thanks again to @Skalap for sending me this as a Secret Santa gift. Probably my favorite vinyl gift ever!

I thought they would release a second volume of these jazz artists meetings after their show in 2022 but it never happened :

Love to read you love this album ❤️

Woah. What is this?

It's a two volume 4 LP show they did on guitar of songs intended as a tribute to Coltrane, with some written by Coltrane and some written by McLaughlin. It's their spiritual guitar jazz after their following of the guru Sri Chinmoy. It was hot off McLaughlin's time playing with Miles. I love it and it's pretty cheap too!

The Boo Radleys - Giant Steps

Giving your album the same name as a Coltrane classic is either a monumental act of hubris or a sign that you want to share in his adventurous spirit (or maybe both). Thirty years ago, the Boo Radleys followed their muse and took their shoegaze style and blended it with whatever sounds they felt like including, such as psych, reggae, and pop, to create a genre-hopping hour of goodness.
