Let The Music Oracles Speak: The January Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread

January 5: John Coltrane

"Find beauty in the unexpected."

I find incredible beauty in the often-dark cacophony of The Reid brothers...

The OG from 1985...

Still bringing it 30 years later...

Also - who'd a thunk that arguably the three greatest figures in jazz music would be from North Carolina - Coltrane = Hamlet. Thelonious Monk = Rocky Mount. Nina Simone = Tryon.

Bright Eyes _ I´m wide awake it´s morning

I don´t have many classical records in my collection and none of Beethoven recordings, so i had to go somewhere else with this..
Leafing through m collection i found that the Bright Eyes used Beethovens famous symphony number 9 ( Known as the orchestration of Schillers Poem Ode to joy) as the Basis for "Road to joy" and i guess Conor Oberst shouted " let´s fuck it up boys, make some noise" would have been just up Beethovens Alley

January 6: James Brown

It is a bit odd that I have only 2 James Brown albums with how much I love some funk...and one is a Christmas album. The other is "Get On The Good Foot" - which I only own as Amazon allowed me to keep it when they shipped it to me instead of the first Black Pumas album.

As for what I'm playing today, though....

Black Randy And The Metrosquad – Pass The Dust, I Think I'm Bowie.
Dangerhouse – PCP-725, 1979

Day 6: James Brown

This collection of obscure funk artists from the 60's/70's definitely has a lineage back to James Brown. And brings the heat on a Monday morning!

Some great background on the artists featured here on the archived version of the Stone's Throw Website. Really interesting conversations with some of the musicians and the effort that went into supporting their muse.

Thanks, @TCell ! Great timing on this PIF!

Vivaldi and others from the Baroque Period paved the road for Beethoven (and Bach, Mozart) in the Classical Period.

Weezer also pays a lot of homage to this particular album in their newer “4 Seasons” set they did.

Fucking love me some Beethoven, though. If you’ve never listened to his Sonata "Pathétique" No.8 in C minor, Op.13 please do.

(I found this video and loved seeing the hand technique. Someone doing this hundreds of years ago must have absolutely fucking blew minds open)

Since tiny Desktop concerts are a favorite on this forum , there is a good one with Igor levitt playing Beethoven

January 4: Iggy Pop

Various – Here It Is: A Tribute To Leonard Cohen

Iggy Pop paying tribute to Leonard Cohen with this performance of "You Want It Darker" is an absolute highlight on this quite fantastic tribute album. Neither man would ever be called conventionally handsome, but they both have undeniably attractive in their rebellious confidence. And, like wine, both have found new richness and nuance in their complexities as they've aged!

Lucinda Williams "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road"
(1998 Mercury; 2014 reissue)
I don't have any classical music in my collection, so I have to head into another direction for today. The reference to Ode To Joy is what stuck with me in the prompt so I was drawn to this record, which includes the fantastic track Joy. One can further stretch this and mention that Lucinda's last name is the same as a famous classical soundtrack composer. A legit yoga stretch, I say. A one-handed tree pose, if you will. But the ode to Joy is sufficient, I think.

In terms of handsome, Cohen's voice had all the sexy he needed. Iggy.... seems fun 😂

I got this because it was a knock off "A Clockwork Orange" score - and not just for the boobs...but it was the boobs that made me look at what it was.

My two favourite parts of the James Brown sound are Fred Wesley and Clyde Stubblefield. Fred would go on from James Brown and the JBs to Parliament/Funkadelic because you just can't stop the funk!

The White Stripes - White Blood Cells

“don’t waste time growing up”

Not sure why but this brought me to the white stripes. Maybe it’s the childlike wonder of “We’re Going to be Friends” or Meg White’s drumming that feels like it captures childlike thrill. I’ve been thinking about this since day 4 and I can’t shake the feeling that the oracle needs me to play this
