Life goes on, man! The July 2023 Challenge!

11. “He’s a good man… and thorough.”
Play an artist you have explored thoroughly

The Police "Synchronicity" (1983 A&M Canada)
I guess The Police counts. I have the box set, which includes all the albums and the album of just about all of the extras. Plus an extra copy of Synchronicity, an original Robert Ludwig Canadian pressing on translucent purple vinyl that sounds extremely good.

8. “Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not ‘Mr. Lebowski.’ You’re Mr. Lebowski. I’m the Dude, so that’s what you call me. That or, uh, His Dudeness or, uh, Duder, or El Duderino, if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.”
Play something short, or long, if you are not into the whole, you know…

Amythyst Kiah – Pensive Pop

The shortest thing I have would be a single-sided 7" from Snotty Nose Rez Kids, but I already played something by them this month AND I really wanted to listen to this again - coming in around 15 minutes this 4 song single-sided EP is definitely on the shorter side of life.

15. ”Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"
Play something that may be not that popular, but you like it anyway

For reasons I can't really comprehend, most folks felt the last Screaming Trees album was an uninspired, last gasp of a dying band dud.

I always thought it was exciting and creative, reflecting their growth til the very end.

Thanks for everything Mark and Van...

HMLTD - West of Eden

Less than 100k monthly listeners on Spotify, which is my qualifier for this prompt. A zany crossing of worlds between post-punk, art/synth pop, and glam rock. Too bad their follow-up this year was mid as can be.

14 - "Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes, well, he eats you."
Play something that was a big swing, successful or not

Wire - A Bell Is A Cup Until It Is Struck

IMG_6004.jpeg

Wire unapologetically went pop in the 1980s and risked abandoning their fans. I really love this record

Goo Goo Dolls - Hold Me Up

Probably more popular to hate Goo Goo Dolls now, but before they blew up with their big late-90s ballads, they were a punk band who worshipped the Replacements and liked covering Plimsouls and Prince songs.

Bonny Doon - Let There Be Music

Bonny Doon are a fantastic Indie Rock band that I feel is a bit overlooked and underrated. Hopefully their new record introduces them to a larger audience.

12 . Da Fino, Private Snoop: “I’m a brother shamus!”
The Dude: “Brother Seamus? Like an Irish monk?”
Play something you might have misheard the lyrics or that has some amusing word play.

Elvis Costello & The Attractions "Get Happy!" (1980 F-Beat; 2011 MOFI reissue)
Elvis Costello is fond of amusing word play. There is a bunch throughout this record. Some examples...

"You lack lust, you're so lacklustre" - Possession
"All of this acceleration is driving you to death" - 5ive Gears In Reverse
"You can't stand it when it goes from real to reel, too real, too real" - B Movie
"You can't stand it when I throw punchlines you can feel" - B Movie
"So fond of the fabric, so fond of the fabrication" - Imposter
"I struck lucky with motel matches" - Motel Matches
"Till I step on the brake to get out of her clutches, Till I speak double Dutch to a real double duchess" - New Amstrerdam
