Magnet Magazine's Top 60 Albums, 1993-2003

Wow, I had never listened to Shellac until (checks current YouTube vid) 14 minutes and 39 seconds ago. I really dig this!
Shellac are amazing. Definitely in my top 5 favourite artists. If you like this album definitely go forwards to their other albums. Some take some repetition (funnily enough) to click, but all have their benefits. The early singles are also fantastic, this one below is possibly the best thing they have released.

Listened to that Air album last night, really dug it. Might give that some more time. And Godspeed always puts out some great stuff, but you have to be in the mood.

While I wouldn’t call myself a superfan, I’ve got Godspeed’s full catalog and I put F# A# (Infinity) at the bottom. Lift Your Skinny Fists is my fave followed closely by Yanqui U.X.O. Either would be preferable if a Godspeed record makes this list.

And I don’t know how Moon Safari ranks below Virgin Suicides OST.

So if it is one per artist, I am even more thrown off by the Air selection. Moon Safari is an absolute masterpiece and loads better than the Virgin Suicides (which is a good album, but never struck me as up to the same level as their other albums).

Still love Gentlemen, its a great record. I love a lot of the songs on Beta Band's 3eps, its just too long since it was not meant to be a single album. Never really gave Unwound as much attention they deserve. Also nice to see Polvo in the top 40, but that is too high for this album.

I listened to that Unwound album again and it’s a ripper.

Don’t disagree about Polvo, although ED is a great album. Do I like it more than Today’s Active Lifestyles (1993)? Probably not. Polvo is so underrated though — really glad to see them on the list.

@Thackeraye I also recommend their Eureka ep. As well, the side band Those Bastard Souls which is more in the straight ahead rock vein. The Train from Terminal Boredom is a great tune.
Oh, I have a Those Bastard Souls album on CD - Debt and Departure. Think I got it because of the Michael Tighe/Jeff Buckley link. Will have to revisit it.

Also, based on what I’ve heard of the list so far, I’m expecting a Guided By Voices album to feature are some point...

Polvo definitely needs a big comprehensive reissue campaign.

In case you missed it, their first two were re-released at the end of February. They sound great and the color variants are groovy.

The remaining catalog with the exception of In Prism is easy to find on the used market, although I wouldn’t object to reissues. In Prism is what really needs a reissue. That may be my favorite Polvo record.

Very happy to have these Polvo reissues. Now if In Prism could be reissued...

So 19 of the bottom 25 (#60 through #36) are from the 1990s...

[Edited: To clarify count is from bottom 25, not top 25.]
