Magnet Magazine's Top 60 Albums, 1993-2003

what a fab ten that is, then...

my ranking would be:
smashing pumpkins
sunny day real estate
interpol
lucinda williams
spoon
built to spill
beck
fugazi
qotsa
steve earle

Don't have too many complaints about this 10. I'd have picked Girls Can Tell or Kill the Moonlight for Spoon or Rated R for QOTSA instead. Can think of a few other Beck albums as well. But nothing that is egregious.

Glad to see Lucinda Williams this high, Car Wheels is an amazing album. I'd have liked to seen Interpol higher, Turn On The Bright Lights is one of my favorite albums of the 2000s.

A hugely influential SDRE album is at 32? An unreal initial offering by a band that played a huge part in ushering NYC's aughts scene is 34? One in ten artists is a woman? And that masterpiece of an album is only 26? I love all these albums so their inclusion is not my sticking point. It's that they seem too low for me. Especially Lucinda.

This top 25 is gonna be interesting.

Fuck yeah!! Steve Earle!! That is one of his best.

Can't fault this grouping though surprised they went with QotSA and not Rated R

I thought there might be some discussion about the choice of QOTSA - S/T over Rated R or Songs for the Deaf. Maybe your comment about biasing bands' "breakthrough" albums might be accurate. I was actually really happy with the QOTSA choice -- it's my personal fave.

Spoon is a tough choice! Sneaks through Moonlight are all really great.

On Beck, I'd like to know how they ended up picking Mutations over Mellow Gold (my preference) or Odelay.

That QOTSA is still my favorite. And the Lucinda is one of the greats. Just saw her tour that last year, and it was a fantastic time. Fugazi, Interpol, Pumpkins and Built to Spill all have greats there.

Oh, and updated the playlist.

That was my feeling about PJ Harvey even lower down the list. I can’t think of a list I’d do for 1993-2003 that wouldn’t have at least 1 PJ Harvey album in and Around the top 10, it probably wouldn’t be the one they went with though...

Pretty good ten that. Will be interesting to see what comes above it - The Strokes feels a little low, if anything. Agree with the order of Flaming Lips & Mercury Rev, think Moby is a little too high.

Also, three of the ten have been VMP AoTMs - maybe they are just using this list to pick their alt-albums?

Funny, almost a boring batch (or at least an expected grouping) but I fully appreciate why they are there.
DJ Shadow - yup
White Stripes - not my cup of tea but the sound that launched a thousand bands that we have all forgot about
FLips - I see why they chose this, but it is like 1 of 3 "breakthrough" records for them from this period.
Mag Fields - need to give this a listen to again
Moby - agree it might be too high
R.E.M. - had to include one of their records
Strokes - see White Stripes
Dirty Three - love Warren Ellis
Weezer - put me in the camp that never got/gets Weezer
Mercury Rev - love MR, think it might be high but should be in the top 25

I've listened to that DJ Shadow a ton in the last year. Never heard it before then somehow. It's perfect for wandering the neighborhood during this weird time. Really love it.

I love the Mercury Rev, White Stripes, and Flaming Lips records. All big during that time. Appreciate the R.E.M. more now then I did, some great tracks there.

Updated the playlist again.

almost a boring batch!?!? you people are NUTS!!

if i was to order that ten...
the flaming lips
dj shadow
white stripes
mercury rev
dirty three
weezer
strokes
moby
magnetic fields
rem

that flips album is in my top 5, shadow in the top 50 of the 90s, stripes in the top 30 of the 00s

some absolute classiques

Love a lot of that 10. White Blood Cells, The Lips album and Is This It we’re huge while I was at uni, really loved all 3 at various times. DJ Shadow is just effortlessly cool. The R.E.M. is the latter day superstar version of R.E.M.’s masterpiece. Moby is a terrible artist and that’s a boring album, better fits a worst albums of the period list.
