March 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread - Here It Goes Again

Day 3: DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

Calvin Harris - Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1

View attachment 130953

I don’t care for most of Calvin’s discography outside of this album, before or after, but this is a pretty great record. And yeah, I’ll admit it’s mostly thanks to the genre shift from EDM to funk/disco/boogie/R&B.
what a coincidence that I play this album on the same day he tweets this:

Day 3: Diamond in the rough

Jeff Parker & the New Breed - Suite for Max Brown

I'm not a big jazz guy, though I have a few albums that I return to regularly. It seems like a huge rabbit hole that I'm sure I'll go deep down some day. For now, this is one of my favourite jazz records.

Beach Bunny - Honeymoon

Ok, so I was looking at my records and really struggling, so I chose this one because I don't have much that's this pop-punky ON VINYL, even though I have a fair bit on CD and digital. So I guess it doesn't really fit the prompt... 😬

What is this? Is it......

Memphis horns?
Punk beats?
Latin trance?
Beat poetry?
Angular post-punk?
Free jazz skronk?
Psych blues?

Yes. Yes it is.

When I talked with Bob Kidney about this record, he told me his influences were primitive blues, Check Berry, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Archie Shepp. As Bob put it, "Elton John, he's original, right? I wanted to create something more, something uniquely original.'

He did such a great job that the industry couldn't figure out what to do with 15-60-75 and they never signed to a record deal. They've been playing regularly for 53 years without any label support.

Hey @gaporter - You know I'm passionate about this band and I love supporting them directly so I'd like to offer up a new copy of this record in honor of your thread. Put together whatever kind of contest/criteria you like, determine a winner and I'll do the rest. I'd like to send you a copy as well if this is your thing.

Any Gorillaz album would probably fit this prompt, but if you've got an album with Snoop Dogg, Paul Simonon, Mick Jones, Lou Reed, De La Soul, and Bobby Womack (among others), you are definitely gonna cross a few genres.

Willie Nelson "Phases and Stages" (1974 Atlantic; 2009 Rhino reissue)
I'm not a big country fan, but I dabble a little. I tend to like artists that blur the genre a little, like Sturgill Simpson, Paul Cauthen, Orville Peck and Lucinda Williams. I also enjoy some Johnny Cash, but the most "country" artist I like is Willie Nelson. I guess he's still "outlaw", so outside the mainstream of the genre so to speak.

March 3 - Diamond in the Rough
I cant think of any records I have from genres I don’t like, but Jazz I really only like if it’s soul jazz or has the Hammond organ. I’ll listen to anything with Jimmy Smith or Shirley Scott.

Ooooh, another organ jazz fan! My favorite type of jazz as well.

Bran Van 3000 "Glee" (1997 Audiogram; 2018 first vinyl reissue)
This album is a complete genre salad, blending elements of alternative, hip-hop, jazz, reggae, trip-hop, drum & bass, french singer-songwriters and even a little bit of country sounds.

Durand Jones & The Indications - Private Space

For one reason or another I never was really able to get into this group. Their previous albums just didn’t do much for me, even if I didn’t think they were bad. I am so glad I gave their newest album a chance, because it’s fantastic.
