MARCH 4
GENRE ROULETTE

Herbie Hancock- Future Shock

A blend of electro-funk, jazz, and hip-hop. One of Herbie’s most adventurous albums (and that’s saying something). I’ve listened to it so many times, but can’t really tell if I actually like it lol. While I appreciate what he was going for, it’s more of a curiosity for me.

Speaking of Genre Roulette, the video for Rockit was something else altogether. I'm really glad the future didn't go this direction.

Day 4: Genre roulette

Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog

I guess you would most likely call this "indie folk" or something, but this is definitely Sam's most experimental album, covering a wide range of genres and sounds. It's probably why I haven't gotten tired of it at all since it came out in 2007. While most of the songs still have acoustic guitar as the framework, they branch out into several sonic directions and keep you on your toes, while various forms of percussion keep you grounded. This is one of the most influential albums on my musical taste, definitely a landmark moment in my listening.

GENRE ROULETTE
Play an album that is impossible to categorize under a single genre.

It may be a cheat to pick something that was written as a movie soundtrack, but I wanted to hear this anyway.

THE 90S CALLED, THEY WANT THEIR ALBUM BACK
Play an album that you feel is quintessentially 90s.

@Yer Ol' Uncle D took the one I was thinking about, so I went to my backup. Released at the end of my junior year of high school, this didn't leave my car for a very long time.

Beastie Boys – Ill Communication
Capitol Records – 509996 94232 15, 1994/2009

DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH
Play an album you love from a band or genre you usually don't like.

Not sure I'd call this a diamond, and at the time it came out it really felt like they'd recycled/ripped off a lot of the LA sound that was big at the time. That's probably still a fair assessment, but the album grew on me a bit over the years. Not crazy about any of their others I've heard. What disappoints me the most is that their name comes from Don DeLillo's White Noise and DeLillo is a favorite author of mine, but even picking that name seemed more so to be them trading on a scene to get popular than any real engagement with it, which would have been welcome.
