March 2025 Challenge Thread - Live Music (Really) Is Better!

Day 18: Madness / Fishbone / Pandoras May 1986, Hollywood Palladium – Don’t remember a whole lot of this night, other than there was a lot of energy and dancing. Play some Reggae / Ska or something worthy of a Party At Ground Zero.

Day 24: The Beat Farmers November 1990, The Barn at UC Riverside - The Beat Farmers were led by the late, great Country Dick Montana who died onstage in 1995. One of the best bar bands I’ve seen. Play something by someone who leaves it all on stage.

Besides being where I was introduced to the Beat Farmers, the Barn is also where I first saw Mike Watt with fIREHOSE a few times in the late 80's/early 90s. Seen him a few times in other iterations/bands since, and he never fails to give less than his all.

Bringing it full circle, the Beat Farmers do a hootenany every once in a while to celebrate their legacy, and bring special guests. Wayne Kramer, Jesse Hughes, Jack Tempchin have all been involved, and Watt showed up a few years ago to sing "Happy Boy" with the Beat Farmers, where the pic below is from. Also adding Country Dick's drum kit, cause its too good not to.

What a great story and great pics. Mike Watt is a damn treasure.

My wife and I saw The Decemberists last summer at Royal Oak Music Theater. We got Projection Room tix, a new thing for the venue. (and us) It was similar to a suite, with a bar, bathroom, plus a rooftop deck. Super fun. Colin and gang were fantastic, a career-spanning setlist and he's such a captivating frontman.

Day 25: Steve Burns / Starlight Mints July 2004, The Casbah – Lots of musicians have been on kids shows from Sesame Street to Yo Gabba Gabba, play something by someone that has appeared on a kids tv show.

Declan Patrick MacManus lamenting the loss of his red 2...

Another Thomas Wolfe Auditorium tape. Was far right and high up at this one. Still a very listenable recording. After the show was over I was talking to a TWA employee, and she told me Elvis was so sick the afternoon of the show they actually had to send for a doctor. If she hadn't told me that, I never would've guessed. I mean, look at this freaking setlist - 28 songs long and a 2 1/2 hour show...

Future Islands "People Who Aren't There Anymore" (2024 4AD)
The band went viral because of Samuel T. Herring's energetic onstage performance on Letterman in 2014. Haven't had the chance to see them live, but have seen several recorded shows. I don't think a non-sweaty onstage version of his exists.

Day 25: Steve Burns / Starlight Mints July 2004, The Casbah – Steve Burns (of Blues Clues fame) released an excellent album with Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips called Songs For Dustmites, and did a short tour with it. Was a little odd to see him sitting at the bar nursing a beer before the show to be honest. Lots of musicians have been on kids shows from Sesame Street to Yo Gabba Gabba, play something by someone that has appeared on a kids tv show.

Steve Burns & the Flaming Lips have a lot of overlap. Steve was in their "Christmas on Mars" movie and narrates the 'Time Travel...Yes!" song on the It Overtakes Me EP. Plus beyond the album above he's done other work with Steven Drozd.

The Flaming Lips also appeared on Yo Gabba Gabba performing "A Fairy Tale Song". And as @Turbo mentioned earlier, can put on a fantastic show. I first caught them in 2003 on the Yoshimi tour w/ Liz Phair opening, but my favorite time was a show here in 2017 that was just mesmerizing.

Day 22: Grateful Dead December 1989, Great Western Forum – Hearing the Dead bust out Help On The Way --> Slipknot! --> Franklin’s Tower to start the second set was a surprise in the best possible way. Play a rarity, or something that would blow you away if you heard it live.

Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham - Moments From This Theatre

I've seen Dan Penn live twice (once on a concert that became this album, once on the ticket/flyer), and both times it felt like something elemental, like watching Elvis or something close to the source. His songs are just the bedrock of a lot of soul from Dark End Of The Street to Do Right Man. I could easily have gone to heaven having heard him sing A Woman Left Lonely. And at the Paris gig, he called out for requests and I said I Hate You, so I got that rarity too. Was super fun to hang out with him and Spooner that evening too, two southern gents. Close to a perfect evening.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Live at Womad 1985

Played catch-up today but Nusrat always looked like he gave it his all. Paired with another band that did, the wonderful Tinariwen. I travelled all the way to Berlin to see them and it was worth it...

Oh, that must have been a wonderful show. Nusrat is one of those 'wish I would have seen' artists.

Day 25: Steve Burns / Starlight Mints July 2004, The Casbah –, play something by someone that has appeared on a kids tv show.

The Beatles - Live at the BBC Volume 2

I'm loath to call the Simpsons kids' TV but I haven't got anything else. All 4 Beatles have been on. Tried to find my Glastonbury 2004 ticket when I saw McCartney on fine form, but will have to make do with Supergrass, who sometimes felt like they could have come from kids' TV (I really dig them though).

Day 26: Pearl Jam / Sonic Youth July 2006, Viejas Arena – Play something for a teacher or person that has inspired you.

REM - Unplugged 1991

My first boss, as well as giving me my job, also gave me my first big break. He was meant to interview Michael Stipe but passed it on to me. It was great fun if rather nerve-wracking. I also reviewed them a couple of times, including Madison Square Gardens and this Prague gig in the pics. I got a VIP pass for that and got to hang out with them a bit, plus got into quite a few other gigs of theirs for free. So am v grateful to that boss.

Damn, there's a white whale for you!

A bit behind from working and going out of town to a volleyball tourney, but going to catch up these next few days!

Day 19: Flying Lotus / Brandon Coleman / Salami Rose Joe Lewis September 2019, House of Blues – This was a Flying Lotus 3D show where they gave out 3D glasses, which worked great with the visualizations and music he had setup for the show. Play something with an electronic or futuristic edge.

Wooden Shjips - West

I band that needs to be played loud! They usually have a background screen up adding some visual element and it works nicely.

Day 26: Pearl Jam / Sonic Youth July 2006, Viejas Arena – This particular show was memorable for a number of reasons, getting Sonic Youth as an opener was a big one. PJ played the Mother Love Bone track Crown Of Thorns and the rarely played Satan’s Bed, but the high point for me was the dedication of Long Road to Ed’s late teacher Clayton Liggett, and how hearing of his passing inspired the song. Play something for a teacher or person that has inspired you.

This one goes out to Mr. Mosley, my band teacher in high school - I played Trombone and Tuba, and also played Baritone and Tuba in Drum Corps over a few summers. Very encouraging to all of us and nurtured a love of the spontaneity of live music that (obviously) continues on to today. His passion was Jazz, and he ended up having a very successful career leading high school jazz bands.

I've seen Kamasi a few times now. The first time was a show before The Epic was released in a local bar with a capacity of 230, it was unreal. The whole band stuffed on a small stage as you can see in the video below that someone recorded off the in-house monitor.

Apologies for the long post, but also including Eddie's dedication to his teacher from the Pearl Jam show referenced above. Well worth the 6 or so minute watch.

Day 20: L.A.M.F. / Jessie Malin December 2017, Belly Up Tavern – This was a celebration of the Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers album of the same name, with the lineup being Walter Lure (Heartbreakers), Mike Ness (Social Distortion), Clem Burke (Blondie), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols). Play a ‘supergroup’ or an artist that’s also been part of a larger group.
