May 2020 Record Challenge Thread (PRIZE RAFFLE AT THE END!)

DAY 18 - LGBT+ ARTIST
Against Me! - Transgender Dysphoria Blues
A very special record to me. Hearing the title track for the first time was a huge deal, that song specifically was one of the first times I'd ever heard that struggle personified so directly, it was a very cathartic experience for me. It's crazy how music can provide so much solace in our times of need. This entire album is great, energetic and emotional and powerful punk rock. It will always hold a special place in my heart.

To make this particular record even more special, it was also a gift from @Jake! from last year's Secret Santa. Thanks again, homie! 😘

Day 18: LGBT+ artist

Being gay myself, I've decided to play some Patrick Wolf today. He's one of my favorite artists connected to the LGBT+ spectrum and I can't recommend his music enough. 💜 Unfortunately I've got all his albums still only on CD and the only one I got on vinyl is a 45" of "Time of my life". I hope also non-long-plays count for this challenge.:p

So Patrick Wolf's music is very melodic pop, he plays the violin and other instruments himself, he's done some electronic stuff and also some great acoustic songs. Some albums I can recommend are "Lycanthropy", "The magic position" and for an acoustic take "Sundark and Riverlight". ❤️

The Highwomen -The Highwomen

The Highwomen formed an all-female group consisiting of Brandi Carlile, Marin Morris, Amanda Shires, and Natalie Hemby to help women in country, and music in general, get more recognition and make it easier for female artists to get noticed. The original plan was to have the fourth member be a rotating seat where up-and-coming women musicians (and other collaborators) could join for songs throughout the album and live shows. That plan was scrapped when they decided to make Hemby the official fourth member of the group due to her help in songwriting and performing in the studio.

There is still a bit of that original idea floating around, though, as the group has a guest-vocal by a British soul singer, YOLA, on the first track of the album, and during the 2019 Newport Folk Festival Brandi Carlile had a time slot which she called “♀♀♀♀ : The Collaboration” and saw an all-female variety show with artists such as Dolly Parton, Sheryl Crow, Linda Perry (from 4Non Blondes), and rising alt-country musicians.

Though only one member of the group identifies as LGBT+, there is song on the album titled “If She Ever Leaves Me” which has been mentioned in multiple places as being the “first gay country song”. That is probably able to be debunked easily, but it was on the #1 Country album on the charts for a moment, so there’s that.

I feel like I’m writing a Wikipedia article here, so I’ll end by just saying I love this album and I can’t wait to see what the Highwomen do next. My girlfriend and I had plans to see them in August with Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell (who happens to be married to one of the band members), but it’s not looking too likely that large shows will be taking place this year.

Also, check out the Highwomen and Brandi Carlile’s sets are Newport Folk Festival 2019! They’re all over youtube. The rendition of What’s Up is incredible.

Day 18 LGBT
My favorite part of Rob Halford coming out was the general indifference. Most just shrugged and said well dude does love wearing leather. Metal heads get a bad rap and I’m sure some are prejudiced like there are in any group, but for the most part in the Metal community if you can Rock you Rock and skin color or sexual preference really doesn’t make a difference and no one can deny that Priest Rocks.

REM - Unplugged 2001

Michael Stipe came out publicly around the time of this Unplugged, which I think is the only time a band played it twice. I met him a while afterwards, and he was both v charming and v private. He wasn't a typical star - he seemed pretty shy, in fact - but for me he was always one of my favourites. One of my great life experiences was following them a little on tour a few years later - some of the best gigs I went to.
