May 2020 Record Challenge Thread (PRIZE RAFFLE AT THE END!)

第二十二天: first in line

After argument ~ 这不是你的游戏(this is not your game)

IMG_20200526_211023.jpg

Back in 2011, Share The Obstacles co-owners Zaza and Yang Haisong formed After Argument out of their mutual musical interests in Washington D.C. punk bands. Yang Haisong is most famous for his work with PK.14 and founding the label maybe Mars in Beijing so naturally anything he produces on vinyl I instabuy

第二十三天: sorry but you're a bit too underrated for me

Yeasayer ~ amen and goodbye

IMG_20200526_212810.jpg

Sure I may be a Yeasayer fanatic, and might be a bit biased but their fourth full length album is in my opinion a record that often gets overlooked in their discography. Sure it's not all hour cymbals but the progress they made as a band is on full display, catchy lyrics, groovy electronic piano grooves, a nice mix of psychedelic combines all three of their previous works into one solid well rounded album that deserves a second listen.

Day 25: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (catch-up edition)

So I was supposed to see Neil way back in high school, but the show got cancelled for whatever reason that is lost to time. Still want to see him, bonus points for how great it would have been to see Crazy Horse in their prime.

Day 26: Roll of the Dice

Today’s challenge forced me to download the Discogs app once again (I’ve had it on my phone multiple times but always end up deleting it because I don’t find it user friendly). At least the app had the decency to randomly pick some soli dinner-cooking music:

And here are half of the morels I’m cooking tonight:

If you ever delete it again and need to do this in the future, you can do it in browser if you are in desktop mode.

You can actually also do it in mobile mode if you turn your phone sideways (landscape style) on the main Collection tab. That’s what I do, since I also dislike the app.

Day 25 (catch up): band you haven't seen live but want to

Stereolab - Emperor Tomato Ketchup

I somehow missed out on listening to Stereolab for years, despite them being a band adjacent to a bunch that I listened to. Last year, that changed, and I saw they were playing a show near me in scenic Big Sur. Unfortunately for me, it was a fundraiser for a library, and tickets were like $200, so I put some of that money towards getting more of these wonderful vinyl reissues.

第二十四天:you could never make it in Hollywood

La La Land

IMG_20200526_220914.jpg

I don't have many soundtracks but I do have the soundtrack and score to La La Land. I went into the movie not knowing it was a musical...And despite living music I'm not a huge fan of musicals, the whole dancing in the street kinda kills it for me...And that's exactly how this movie started and I was like wtf did I just get tricked into watching...Little did I know that by the end I'd be in tears and loving every minute of it

Day 26: Discogs Randomizer

Mitski - Puberty 2

What a contrast to the never seen live theme as I've reached double digit Mitski shows. The first time I saw her was in a bowling alley and almost 3 years to the day after that I saw her in an arena. I also get to spout off the hot take that she's the best artist of the last half dozen years or so. Bonus poster in the background.
