May 2020 Record Challenge Thread (PRIZE RAFFLE AT THE END!)

I think @blissfullychaotic called dibs on June

Would it be bad form for me to request dibs for the July challenge?
So who’s gonna do the June challenge ..been a good distraction in these Covid times
I think if we are gonna go a few months deep we should almost set up a sign up thread to keep track. That being said, I am lazy and do not wanna be the fella to set up and run the Challenge thread sign up sheet thread.

DAY 29 - NOSTALGIA

IMG_20200529_170813.jpg

I bought this album for the first time in Summer of 2006.
At the time, I was a graduate student at University of North Texas. When I bought this album, it was during the three months I had off for the summer and I was back home in Connecticut.
This album to me is the soundtrack of that summer. I started a band with my best friend, a drummer. We brought in two other people and in the six weeks we were playing music together came up with about 12 songs. There were lots of late night drives, way too many beers, camping trips, marlboro mediums... It was fun to be 25 and figuring out what would happen after I graduated. I remember that summer as one of the happiest times I have ever had.
It's just such a shame that everything started going downhill with all of those good times almost immediately after I moved home for good in December. It also hurts to say that we all grew very, very far apart and I don't talk to any of those people anymore. Even my best friend who was the drummer and eventually the best man of my wedding... Just so many choices were made over time and now we can't even admit we used to be friends anymore.
I try not to think about those things when I listen to this album and I don't think it was until today that I realized just how much weight those memories had within these songs. For the 36 minutes it takes to listen to this again, life is just starting and everything is at once a mess and infinitely possible again.

Alright ya nerds, you asked for it...

Day 29: Nostalgia

When this came out I had it on CD, but I was mowing various yards during summer break and a CD Walkman just wouldn't work - the anti-skip function was poor when combined with a riding lawn mower. I copied this album and many others to long playing cassettes - 1 album per side. I think this had Helmet - Meantime on the other side.

MP3's and players were still years away from existing, but would have been AWESOME at the time.

Day 29 - Nostalgic

I'm guessing we all have so many moments in life that a song is attached to a very specific memory. It's one of the things we love about music, right? It's there so often during the good, bad and all things in between.

So this is one of those things I've never forgotten: When I was 9 years old, I got a clock radio for Christmas. I remember listening to the radio every night for hours before falling asleep. And staring at the glowing red numerals of the clock. There's a handful of songs that remind me of those nights. Peg is one of those songs I remember hearing a lot, and even now still reminds me just a little of those glowing red numerals.

Day 29: An album that makes you feel nostalgic

Rancid / ...And Out Come The Wolves

Not a whole lot to say about this one that anyone would care about. Just know that this was played lots in a car with the nickname Ironsides by a rotating group of teenagers driving around a boring suburban town looking for someone to buy them alcohol or anything else exciting.

Day 29: Nostalgia

mewithoutYou - Catch For Us The Foxes

I bought this band's first album after hearing them on a label sampler my freshman year in high school and I've been a fan ever since. I got this reissue of their second album (2004) delivered a month ago to finally complete my collection of their studio discography on vinyl. They're calling it quits next year after being important to me for over half my life.

Day 29: Nostalgia

When I was 10 years old, my dad and I watched Björk’s MTV unplugged performance. We were hypnotized and probably a bit confused by her performance. One problem is that we didn’t catch the beginning of the snow so we actually didn’t know who/what we were watching; it wasn’t until several months later that one of his work colleagues connected the dota for us. He bought the CD and this album (Debut) has been part of my life since then.

(As for the vinyl album pictured below, I bought it for a vendor at the 2007 Pitchfork Festival for $12. I would go on to see Björk live for the first and so far only time just a few weeks later.)
