May 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - A Crash Course for the Ravers

Day 4 - Bombers
Seemed a good idea / To drop a bomb on the wasteland here
Play a record that is considered a bomb but that you love

ROXY MUSIC FLESH + BLOOD (1980 EG Records, Polydor Japan pressing)
Generally regarded as the worst Roxy Music record. I think the choice of opening with a cover of "The Midnight Hour" doesn't help with the flow. Seriously, just deleting that track would elevate the entire album. The LP is filled with bangers like "Oh Yeah", "Same Old Scene" and "Over You", which keep me coming back. Some great deep cuts too, like "My Only Love" and "No Strange Delight". Bryan Ferry is in full suave mode on here. I hear the framework for a lot of Duran Duran's early 80's output in these songs. Anyone paying attention to my posts know I'm a bit of an O.G. Duranie. The recording of this album is fantastic. And one advantage of a record that doesn't have strong acclaim is that it's not hard to get immaculate original pressings.

This album gets a (justifiably) bad rap just for the cover alone. I mean, just look at it. Bill Kreutzmans majestic chest hair, Phil Lesh and his goofy grin, and Bob and Mickey doing their best Hall & Oates. Jerry, and Brent to a lesser degree, are the only two that make the look work.

While the production is a little too slick, there are some classic tracks on it: Alabama Getaway, Althea, Feel Like a Stranger on side one alone.

Day 4: Bombers

Maxwell
- Embrya

I don’t know if Embrya could be considered a total bomb or not (it still sold at least a million copies), but while this album’s rep has gotten better over the years, it was not received very well by fans or critics at first. That’s insane to me, I honestly prefer Embrya to Urban Hang Suite.

Ya, I still can't figure out why everyone looses their shit over Urban Hang Suite.

Day 01: Lazarus
Look up here, I’m in heaven
Play something by an artist who had a 2nd career
Robert Pollard - From A Compound Eye
5BE0B702-0622-4124-A4D6-F6ACA647A830.jpeg

So I read this incorrectly as “having a second career” as opposed the having a second Career Chance but I’m gonna stick with my initial interpretation. Bob was a grade school teacher for 14 years prior to GBV’s taking off. I can only imagine how fun it musta been to have been a college aged guy who grew up in Dayton to see your 4th grade teacher rocking out on MTV.

Day 02: Suffragette City
Don’t lean on me man / cos you can’t afford the ticket
Play a record that was very expensive or you got cheap and is now stupid pricy

David Bowie - Without You/Criminal World 7”
462118A0-D754-4654-9EC3-62C115DC2C24.jpeg
Not sure if the Keith Herring+Bowie connection on the album art is the driving value behind this release (Discogs lists the median price at $49.99) but I picked it up along with around a dozen more 45’s at a flea market for $0.50 cents a piece.

Phoenix - Bankrupt!

While I'm not sure this was considered a bomb I know the general reception of the album was a bit of a let down coming on the heels of their smash Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. I still really dig it though and a number of these tracks sound amazing live.

Day 03: Prettiest Star
All because of what you are / The prettiest star
Marc Bolan played guitar on the original recording in 1970.
Play something with a ‘special guest’ or a 'collab' as the kids call it these days

Sonic Youth - Experimental Jet Set, Trash And No Star

Does Kathleen Hanna dancing around the “Bull In The Heather” video count as a collaboration?

Spacehog - The Chinese Album

I was pretty surprised that this record was ever pressed on wax in 2020. Spacehog was flirting with being another Alt. Nation one hit wonder along the lines of Beck and Radiohead based on the awesomeness that was “In The Meantime” off their debut, Resident Alien. Like those other aforementioned artists, they followed up their debut with an epic albums that expanded on what made those hits songs so well-loved to begin with. For Spacehog’s follow up that meant leaning hard into the Bowie-sequence Glam rock ethos. Unfortunately, unlike Beck and Radiohead; Spacehog’s follow up didn’t launch them into Alt. Rock superstardom, after a mild push behind the lead single the album and outside of lead singer, Royston Langdon’s marriage to Liv Tyler; the band kinda disappeared. It’s a shame too. As the album is quite good.

Soul Asylum - Let your dim light shine
Most oc the xritixs did not like it, most Fan either like their earlier albums or grave dancers Union, but it remains my personal favorite souk asylum album.

I bought this on cassette while on a Europe coach tour holiday it's the only thing I had to play for 2 weeks with my walkman

Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique

How do you top a record that sold a bazillion copies? Not with this sample-delic crazy album. A bomb only in that it sold just under 300,000 copies in its first year of release. The worst selling BBoys studio album, and a true classic
