I'm surprised how much difference relative humidity can make in vinyl playback. Previously when it's been cold and dry (RH 25%), I had been experiencing more surface noise than normal. However, last night during a rainstorm (RH 45%) everything played was dead quiet. 😊

So what you’re saying is that I should stop moaning about the rain and be glad I live in a country where the humidity is generally between 80% and 100% during winter?

😂😂😂

Static at fault?

You know what's depressing? This UD is making me realize just how much I've damaged some pretty special records in my collection during my time with my Fluance. For a while there I think I was spinning records with a misaligned cart and I think it did some nasty work to some grooves. No other way to explain brand new records + AP presses sounding worn out and harsh.

Side A: LA Woman AP sounds shot, rest sounds great
Side A: VMP Otis Redding sounds shot
Side A: MoFi Surrealistic Pillow sounds shot, rest sounds great
Entire: Sarah Vaughan AS Pressing

Will need to hunt down replacements for all of these at some point :). I'm sure theres more but thats all I've worked through.
I did this with one of my Art Blakey discs before I realized the stylus was bent. I only played the first two tracks with the bent stylus, and now they sound worse than the rest on the same disc. Bummer.

It’s shocking how fragile those grooves are!

I'm going to tell you all I'm crazy, you convince me I'm not. The first song on each side of a record seems to not sound as good as the rest. So I double checked my tracking force and I found my platter wobbles just the tiniest bit. I'd say maybe 1mm of movement at the edge. It's enough to give me 1.8 along the edge of the platter and 2.0 near the center. Am I nuts to think that's enough to actually make me wonder wtf is going on during the first few minutes of a side, then everything smoothes out and I forget about it.

I did align the cart a month or two ago with a Geo Disc.

I had this same takeaway, but with the StudioTracker. What do you have on your UD now?
(sorry for the late post...was away for a week off) I'm currently running a Grado Gold3. It reminds me a lot of the MasterTracker, but with a little more definition in the upper-mids and a little shimmer in the treble freqs. that I prefer. Basically, not as polite as the MasterTracker, but not what I would call aggressive either. My next cart will be a Hana SL.

I wouldn't suspect a 1mm wobble to be the culprit, (although it would still bug me to no end). My first suspicion would be your overhang. It's just a wild guess, but overhang is the only thing I can think of, (other than a tonearm defect), that would cause distortion on the outer area of a record as opposed to the inner area, (or vice versa for that matter). I'd recheck your alignment first with a known-to-be-good protractor.

That says a lot that a $260 cartridge is competitive with the MasterTracker. Plus a user replaceable/upgradable stylus. The Gold3 is a bargain, and sounds far more expensive than it costs.

@scorpio333 The MoFi Geo Disc works well and is known to be good. I’ve had one for 35 years. That said, it’s difficult to point the sight like to the bearing/pivot point on the MoFi arms. I use a straight edge to extend the line across the pivot point on top of the arm, and once I’m on it, use blue painters tape to secure the Geo Disc and platter. Then align.

Spent all day listening to records today and I’m noticing instances of crass/shrill/stiff highs, especially in relation to voices.

Is this likely due to the Opus not being broken in yet? It’s kind of to the point where I’ve only been spinning instrumental/electronic stuff because it’s v distracting.

How many hours? Crass/shrill/stiff does not describe any Grado I’ve ever heard.

Grado house sound is full, warm, smooth. Does the VTA look correct when it is playing the album (even with album not tilted down) ? The highs are not turned up on the NAD ?

I would let it breakin at least 25-50 hours. Then go on to other things such as a better interconnect.

Yea sounds like something strange is goin on especially if the cart was professionally aligned before they sent the TT to you.

I’d definitely recommend ordering a new interconnect cable…I really like my Signal audio one. But it took a few weeks to get made and sent to me.

Probably under 15 atm! It’s not pervasive through all instances, seemingly happens at peaks where it all of a sudden sounds like their voice is reflecting off tight cellophane for an instance. I would describe it as the opposite of smooth but it’s interesting, because all instrumentation sounds great 🤷🏼‍♂️.

To my eyes it looks fine, only thing that looks off is what I shared a couple days ago in here where my styli looks to my eyes like it’s a little off center but everyone else seems to think it looked fine! Yeah, I have tone defeat on actually btw.

I’ll give this a whirl as a baby step. I already emailed Upscale, hoping I’m just being paranoid
