Movies

Lucy and Desi looked so off and odd and it was hard to see anything but Kidman and Bardem coated in cheap plastic.

I felt this way about The Eyes of Tammy Faye. The acting was fine, but the makeup on Chastain and Garfield will forever be distracting.

But the thing that really made me hate it was the ending where everyone celebrates because we don’t have to worry about the Reds infiltrating good ol American values. It felt gross.

I get it. But while the in house audience may be celebrating Lucy not being a Communist, I think the intent was for moviegoers to celebrate that she wasn't blacklisted.

I dunno. I don't know if I ever knew she was accused of being a Communist. So, I learned something.

And J. K. Simmons was solid.

And Nina Arianda was solid.

And Tony Hale is always a good time.

I didn't need that sex scene though, which is hilarious.

Hahaha, I promise I wouldn't choose it for best picture.

I watched a couple of different films today.

First up was M. Night Shyamalan's "Old". It's a decent concept that was actually really enjoyable to watch. It was let down a bit by really sloppy dialogue, especially at the beginning. It served no purpose other than foreshadowing the main plot but was done in a way that makes it painfully obvious. In fact, some of it isn't even sentences that would actually be said in "real life", it's just embarrassing writing really.

Next up was Finch (with Tom Hanks). Now, I have a strange interest in apocalypse films so I knew it would be my type of film. It's a great film that has some really sweet moments, some tense moments, and built the story fantastically. In a way, it has elements of a real life Wall-e. A very fun watch.

@David A. is knee deep in his 72 page dissertation on why Venom 2 has merit and deserves a place on his list. Patience will be rewarded.
Venom 1 is great and so is Venom 2 because Tom Hardy basically willed it.

That and because while Venom 1 plays out like a typical early 2000’s origin story that can’t balance its tone between scenes, Venom 2 builds on the best parts on Venom 1.

Great films. Way better than anything else in the MCU.

Good movie! I watched it on a cross-country flight over Christmas.

Thomas McCarthy is underappreciated.
Same, thought Damon did a great job capturing the mannerisms and spirit of a fish out of water. In this case, a recovering alcoholic conservative southern man in France. However, I wasn’t convinced with Abigail Breslin’s performance. Her scenes, especially in jail, felt passive and noncommittal. IDK, like her relationship with her dad was supposed to be strained and she’s in jail yet her demeanor was all over the place, especially given what it was building up to.

I’d need to watch it again to get a better grasp, but I felt like she did a good job portraying a certain level of mental instability/unreliability. There was never a sense of her being fully honest with anyone.

I adored little Maya. What a charming performance.

Watched the Get Back Rooftop Concert in IMAX, with a fun live Q&A with Peter Jackson beforehand. It was, naturally, amazing.

I guess I should finally sit down and watch Get Back, eh?

Was it edited differently than it appeared on Get Back?

No, just a giant screen presentation and a brand-new IMAX sound mix courtesy of Giles Martin. My friend, who’s watched the series, says it was basically the introduction from the first episode with about an hour of the last episode (ie the whole concert and a bit of the afterward).

Seeing it big and loud was a borderline religious experience, though. And watching Jackson answer audience questions about his process.

Sigh, I wanted to go to this but I spent the day lazily in bed and watching Chiefs vs. Bengals

When we first looked for tickets there was nothing besides a couple front row seats, but my friend checked again this morning and I guess someone had canceled, cuz there were a pair of prime, near-center tickets suddenly available. Kismet!

Here's my top 20 from last year if anyone's interested!

Awesome list! I still haven’t seen the father (personal reasons keep me away from a likely two hour cryfest) but I feel like I need to see the Green Knight again. I saw it the day after taking the Bar Exam and fell asleep during it, but I know that was a me issue and not any indication of the merits of the movie. I remember thinking it looked great and I appreciated it’s take on a classic hero tale, so maybe this is due for a rewatch soon
