Movies

Picked up this movie and started watching it. Good so far.

It’ll be an easy one to miss and requires all sorts of belief suspension but Mrs Harris Goes to Paris is a delightful little movie, a lot of feel good moments and a good mix of emotions with some really good performances. Maybe just a tick too long but among my faves of the year (outside of the Everything, Everywhere… tier)

What's your impression on the 4k after watching it? I jumped on it when it dropped to $30 at Amazon but they pushed the shipping date back until early August there.

Compared to the old Anchor Bay DVD, it's great.

The stream on Shudder isn't too bad, but the 4K disc is noticeably better.

On DVD is def. the last time I seen it. I hesitantly skipped the Joe Bob episode for now in hopes they did the 4k justice so that's awesome to hear! So many great releases lately and plenty more coming up.

The joe bob episode is good just for the info and insight he brings, but the 4K is worth the purchase...although it was kinda pricey buying direct from Synapse.

Giving this one a watch tonight.

Good choice, I have been wanting to see it and finally had a chance last night and it lived up to the hype! Always nice to see some Horror in the mainstream that's not just a vanilla cash grab or tired idea. It's far from a classic imo and not "scary" which i've seen as a weird negative by some people but I was intrigued until the end and loved the villian design. The sister stole the movie for me anytime she was in a scene and was one of the more memorable kid performances i've seen recently but everyone was solid!

Also, this was yet another reminder just how horror movies work so much better for me in pre cell phone era's.

Really well done in my opinion too. And same impressions after. It's not a scary horror, but it sets a tone that it holds well throughout. I need to think on the last fifteen minutes of it to see if I think that part worked well or not, and it'll probably take another watch. And yes, the sister was the star of the film with her performance. I would have liked more of her role cause she was aces!

Awesome, we're pretty dang aligned here.

Over the years I've softened my stance on zombies and vamps, which I used to be very averse to. 28 Days Later is always a huge fave of mine though.

With that in mind, The Sadness was a recent Shudder acquisition that's been pretty well-hyped. Ultra-violent Korean zombie epidemic. Had a lot of fun watching it.

Zombie for Sale is also HUGELY under the radar as a Korean zombie horror comedy. Heartwarming and fun. Cannot recommend it enough.

One Cut of the Dead is an absolute MUST if you enjoy meta horror comedy. Super gratifying and a fun ride all the while.

Blood Quantum is also a fun and important addition to the zombie category with a contemporary indigenous/First Nations perspective.

Since you enjoyed A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, I eagerly offer up Habit, The Addiction, and BLISS. All deliver a gritty post-punk sensibility to their vampiric/drug addiction stories. I totally geeked out when BLISS had a rock club scene with a live Deth Crux performance, whose album is already on my shelf.

Oddball recos based on nothing but my own favor:
  • Tetsuo The Iron Man – 60-min industrial body horror classic. Perfect in every way.
  • The Medium – Thai found footage Exorcist jam (My fave film of 2021)
  • Housebound – Underrated kiwi house arrest horror-comedy with a fun twist. Hilarious deadpan performances.
  • The Runner – 45-minute horror love letter and album film by Boy Harsher starring Kris Esfandiari (King Woman)
  • Spring – Eldritch horror/romance in modern day Italy from director duo Moorhead/Benson (The Endless, Resolution – both also on Shudder)
  • La Llorona – Guatemalan political supernatural revenge flick... soooo good
  • Minor Premise – lean sci-fi horror
  • PG: Psycho Goreman – Throwback horror comedy practical effects extravaganza
  • Shrew's Nest – fascinating and tense capsule piece about an agoraphobe in unexpected love
  • Dogs Don't Wear Pants – Thought-provoking Finnish S&M black comedy
  • Female Prisoner #701 Scorpion series – A major source (i.e., "inspiration") for what Tarantino grifted to make Kill Bill
  • The Mortuary Collection Fun newer funeral home anthology with Clancy Brown (reason enough!)
  • Let the Corpses Tan – Stylish af French/Belgian acid trip of a "Western" film (this one's a crapshoot whether it works for people)
  • The Queen of Black Magic (1981) – Indonesian witchcraft/possession practical effects extravaganza (skip the remake)
  • May the Devil Take You Too – Sequel to Indonesian May the Devil Take You (on Netflix). I didn't care for the first which was mostly Evil Dead/Sam Raimi mimicry, but the sequel really won me over and finds its own voice within that Raimi-worship style
  • American Mary – Soska sisters' body horror about a doctoral student conducting black-market body mods
  • Extra Ordinary – Underrated Irish horror comedy
Apologies for the reco onslaught. Hopefully all this (from a happy subscriber) helps you squeeze the absolute most out of your trial.

I've been able to watch a handful of your recommendations so far. I really enjoyed One Cut of the Dead. Absolutely brilliant. The Sadness has stood out as well. I could've gone for another twenty or thirty minutes for an alternate ending, but I'm not mad about it. Definitely reminded me of the comic book Crossed: Badlands (I only read the Max Bemis run 🤫).

Trying to avoid as much as I can about Nope before I see it this Sunday.

Other than that, we've just decided to dive into the full extended trilogy of Lord of the Rings. My girlfriend is a huge fan, I'm not as much but I do like them. I read the books a long, long time ago. And saw all the films in theaters, but I've never seen the extended cuts. Just finished up Fellowship. It didn't feel remarkably different than what I remember the theatrical being? But I'm still excited to see how the other two go down.

Just finished this and it was ok. I wish they'd have explained the mythos a bit more, but it made me read a few Wikipedia pages instead.
