Movies

Come play a game with me.

These would probably change on any given day. 90 and 00 were fantastic movie years and there were so many I could have picked that I'd have been happy with. The others were a little more sparse, but I didn't dig too deep in my search so there are probably some bangers I forgot about.

1980 - Flash Gordon
1990 - Dances With Wolves
2000 - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
2010 - Kick-Ass
2020 - Love and Monsters

1980 - Raging Bull (I actually haven’t seen the Shining)
1990 - Dances With Wolves (Home Alone is a close second place)
2000 - Gladiator (this is the most stacked year of the bunch)
2010 - It’s Kind of A Funny Story
2020 - One Night in Miami

1980 - The Empire Strikes Back
1990 - Home Alone
2000 - High Fidelity
2010 - Inception
2020 - Promising Young Women

I'll probably change my mind tomorrow.

Yeah, today I feel like swapping out the last two for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Palm Springs.

I decided to do a little James Caan film festival this weekend. Watched the Gambler last night, really liked it but a rough watch at times. Deciding between The Godfather and Rollerball tonight, and probably Brian's Song tomorrow.

What else should I add to my watchlist?

Misery, Bottle Rocket and Alien Nation

Elf and Mickey Blue Eyes are less of a rough watch if you want to balance things out with some lighter fare, haha.

Just watched Irma Vep, and am increasingly convinced that Maggie Cheung has one of the best faces in film history.

Agreed.

Have you looked into Assayas' miniseries remake with Alicia Vikander? I'm intrigued but I wonder how this movie would work in any other context.

I have heard it’s very good! A friend of mine who loves the original movie has been very into the series.

Saw Thor: Love & Thunder last night. Certainly a lot of fun, as one would expect from Waititi at this point, but it struggles hard with its substance. My biggest disappointment, however, was the lack of another killer Mothersbaugh score to earn another Oscars snub with.

My roomie (a major Thor & Loki fan and indie author/artist) already put together a script doctor analysis which captures a lot of its shortcomings.

SPOILERS, obv.

We rented it back when it was showing via digital film fest VOD circuits. Quite the spectacle! Totally worth the Shudder sub/trial for those curious.
I got the year black Friday sub to AMC+ for like $10. It's awesome to get all the Shudder stuff on there and they've had some great shows too. Most recently Dark Wind is enjoyable. But I've watched the Creepshows multiple times since getting the sub, which alone made it worth it.

Oh yeah! I had Shudder already, but I jumped on the $1/mo AMC+ deal too for a few of their exclusives. (They have Pontypool which rarely streams.)

I used a trial subscription to watch it this afternoon and while there were some pretty wicked visuals and lots of nasty noises, I have no idea what the hell it was trying to tell me.
