Movies

I rewatched Robocop reboot from 2014. I haven't seen it since in theaters but it's really not as bad as everyone says. Yeah, the original is a masterpiece and this is nowhere close to touching it. But if you go into this with the mindset of it being it's own thing, this is pretty decent. I would even say that this is better than any of the Robocop sequels.

It's kinda silly how many legitimately good movies with real names are getting dumped hard into this wasteland between summer movie extravaganza and awards season.

See How They Run is not like...a top tier movie but it's hugely enjoyable. I'd argue Sam Rockwell and Saorise Ronan give most movies a high floor, but the cast was widely good and the very meta nesting doll plotting of the Mousetrap and the movie grew increasingly funny as it went. I thought it was well structured and creative and didn't overstay its welcome. It may have paled a little bit to a movie like Knives Out, but I thought it was a step above the recent Murder on the Orient/Death on the Nile adaptations even in terms of overall execution and pacing. A very good way to spend an hour and change.

Confess Fletch is a bit of a reboot of the Fletch character - Chevy Chase's 80s Detective. Except there's no Chevy Chase because he's now 35 years down the line and kind of an ass. The Jon Hamm casting choice was excellent as was the decision to tone down the comedy a little bit. I thought it was an exceptionally funny movie with a lot more reliance on personality and good character work across the board. The Hamm / Roy Wood Jr. interchanges are constantly funny and the decision to lean on a lot of character comedic actors for other roles really turned out well. A John Slattery sighting for a mini Mad Men reunion, copious shots of Boston (actually shot in Boston), and generally some rock solid writing really turned out for a very good movie comedy.

I haven't seen Moonage Daydream yet but that's on this weekend's list so it's good to hear the positive word. Of note The Woman King did well at the Box Office, has glowing reviews, and the super elusive A+ Cinemascore...worth noting - I'm hoping to see one or both this weekend along with Don't Worry Darling.

Yeah, I am on there….

I’d say Moonage because I think it’ll be gone quicker but both are supposed to be good stuff

Man...I wish I saw Pearl instead and I don't watch horror movies. Moonage was clearly for someone but not for me, easily my biggest disappointment of the year.
