Movies

I need to figure out where I can watch that. I was going to watch Dressed To Kill next. I only really knew De Palma for some of his bigger stuff like Carrie, Mission Impossible, and Scarface - but those are all very different.

On scoping his filmography, I realized he directed one of the worst movies I've seen of all time too

Black Dahlia

I liked Black Dahlia, but I really didn't like Scarface...

I only watched Scarface in high school, and thought it didn’t live up to the hype. I’ve also been allergic to Tony Montana’s cultural tail as some sort of successful badass; the movie clearly thinks he’s a dumb asshole whose greed and excess are his downfall. Feels like Walter White is experiencing the same social syndrome.

I feel like audiences have grappled with the anti-hero for a long time, but it's only until recently that we actually put these characters under a lens outside of "wow these dudes are actually ACTING on their anger, and I can live vicariously through them." People are now distancing themselves from movies like Fight Club where the message has not so subtly been ignored for decades and the whiplash from the cultural tail has left society with a gigantic hangover.

I agree on Black Dahlia, I think it’s my least favorite De Palma movie I’ve seen. Blow Out is definitely my favorite of his, has his signature sleaze but also is so beautifully shot and directed. His range is wild - I second the Phantom of the Paradise, that’s a wild ride and the soundtrack is a whole lot of fun

Loved this one; haven’t seen it since around when it came out.
My wife and I watched this on Netflix YEARS ago and then it recommended another documentary that was about this tiny parking lot on/near a college campus that was staffed by students there. It was irreverent and had little to no plot but was a fun watch nonetheless.

I was struggling to recall the title, but it's so meta it hurts.

I tried, I fell asleep in the theaters bc it was so confusing to me. Then I tried watching again later bc I thought I might be missing something but couldn't get into it.
I remember it leaving me with more questions than answers and I ended up grabbing a book on the Black Dahlia murders and read about all of it.

So I’m guessing I’m a bit out of step here not watching a horror/thriller but I went out to the cinema last night and saw the Banshees of Inisherin. It’s just a really enjoyable and funny offbeat comedy, really liked it. Continues Martin McDonagh’s hot streak after In Bruges and 3 Billboards.

After this I went back and watched The Guard for the first time since it was out on DVD. Man I’d forgotten just how great that film was!
