Movies

I'm hoping Criterion will get some other Scorsese films that are hard to get like After Hours, Color Of Money (the old blu-ray looks terrible) and Bringing Out The Dead.
The fact that Bringing Out the Dead doesn't have a widely available Blu-ray release is a travesty. One of my favorite Scorsese films and one of the best Cage performances too.

Here are some excerpts from One Star reviews of The Godfather; to each their own I guess.

"Better read the 2 sentence storyline in Wikipedia rather than wasting 3hrs."

"Overrated, bland, and very tedious to watch. Wasted 40 minutes of my life"

"Pure and total trash....in fact all of Francis Ford Coppola's film are total garbage. This movie is a waste of time and space and every copy of it deserves to be burned."

" I've never seen the ending. I have no idea what they're talking about. It's like they're speaking a different... You know, that's where I lose interest in it. But I do love The Money Pit"

"This movie made me throw up in my mouth, and then I left the theater and went to Super Baby Baby Geniuses 2 and had the time of my life."

"I watched it and didn't get an erection so an F in my book!"

For context as to my post above - my wife and I watched The Godfather yesterday, she had never seen it, and I hadn't watched it uninterrupted in years, decades probably. So I decided to do some reading today and saw a lot of one star ratings and was curious as to the complaints. I realize not everyone would rate it a five, but one star? Then again, based on some of those quotes ^ I guess it makes sense.

I think we'll do Godfather II tonight. Confession; I've never watched it in its entirety.

Godfather II is a masterpiece. Hope you enjoy! When I read one star reviews for classic movies I feel like the are almost always written by contrarian assholes. I get not liking a movie, but one star is so bad that there is no way you can honestly think that

"I do like The Money Pit." might sum it up for some of them.

I'm definitely looking forward to watching G2.

Finally watching Beau Travail for the first time. Gorgeously shot, inexplicably great editing, haunting sound. There was a stretch that reminded me heavily of Perfume Genius’ On the Flood video; after sending a cheeky instagram clip of it paired with the song, some quick googling revealed it’s an intentional reference. Love it when art I like is talking to art I like.

Watched Sophie’s Choice for the first time tonight. While I think the present-day scenes could have been a bit more cohesive, the flashbacks were incredible and Meryl made me feel like I was watching a foreign film instead of “actor memorizes words in different language.” And of course, the harrowing scene for which the movie title comes from. I expected it to be a gut punch, but the reaction from the child actor was devastating, and apparently authentic.

More about that here:

1980s Hanks had some good wholesome output, but I think The 'Burbs is in another league. Saw that for the first time recently and was pleasantly surprised. Having grown up on the movie Big, I love his early stuff before he went serious.
The Burbs is so great. Great cast, and there's a ton of really funny scenes, and it's become pretty quotable over the years as well.

"There go the goddamn brownies"

Bachelor Party is my favorite. A hard R 80s Comedy. Its hilarious and also surprising to see Hanks going so blue.
