Movies

I started a WA filmography rewatch before Isle of Dogs, but never completed it. I will definitely do it before French Dispatch though.

my ranking without having revisited a lot of these titles in a while:

1) Rushmore
2) Royal Tenenbaums
3) Grand Budapest Hotel
4) Moonrise Kingdom
5) Isle of Dogs
6) Life Aquatic
7) Fantastic Mr Fox
8) Bottle Rocket
9) Darjeeling Limited

I've seen every Anderson except Bottle Rocket, but it's been sooo long since I've seen most of them, I couldn't make a list that feels right.

I remember Rushmore, Moonrise Kingdom, and Fantastic Mr. Fox being my favorites.
I have seen Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums so much that I basically sit there and quote the whole damn thing . My SO won’t even watch them with me anymore because I am so damn annoying but I can’t help myself.

Also, give Bottle Rockets a go. It is decidedly unquirky albeit only in comparison to the rest of his output. I assume that was mostly driven by lack of cash though. It’s still pretty fucking funny.

Royal Tenenbaums is one of those movies that if it's ever on I will stop whatever I was doing before and watch the rest of it. I've seen it countless times now and can quote all of it. It's the only Wes Anderson movie to crack my top 25 favorite movies of all time list.

Martin Scorsese sweats Bottle Rocket, and its hard not see why since it's very much a satirical twist on the heist genre. It's Wes divorced from lots of the craft and skill that makes for the appeal for some folks. I don't think it is as nuanced as his later work, but it's very well written, and without some of the affectation it seems to have a bit more direct message and observations on life. It is also as @TenderLovingKiller® says, fucking hilarious at times, the Wilson brothers are so good as foils to each other.

Yeah I’ve seen Rushmore and Royal so many times they’re embedded in my brain.

also yeah Bottle Rocket is still a great movie, that’s often overlooked. It’s not as stylish as later films, but it has a great movement to its plot and yes it’s one of the funniest ones generally.

Caught Portrait of a Lady on Fire tonight. Unfortunately wasn't able to get into the screening with an in-person Q&A but the multiplex had an advance screening. Definitely one of the top films from last year, very much a slow controlled burn (pun intended) so keep that in mind if that's not your scene.

Yup and now I know why DeNiro did it. I’m very ugh about Taxi Driver too.
Yeah, it’s the type a flick I am glad I saw but isn’t something I will likely seek out again.

On a side note; I s there any non-Shakespearian role that is more critically lauded than that of The Joker? Ledger and Phoenix both win Academy Awards and Nicholson at his most iconic. I know, the less said about Leto’s performance the better but still 3 out of 4.

Hannibal Lecter maybe?
