Movies

Yeah, it’s the type a flick I am glad I saw but isn’t something I will likely seek out again.

On a side note; I s there any non-Shakespearian role that is more critically lauded than that of The Joker? Ledger and Phoenix both win Academy Awards and Nicholson at his most iconic. I know, the less said about Leto’s performance the better but still 3 out of 4.
I think Vito Corleone is the only other character multiple performers have won Oscars for playing.

Finally watched Parasite last night. Can't recommend it enough! My wife and I have been looking forward to this one since the theater adverts first came out, and we discovered the director of The Host had a new movie out. Sadly it never came to the theater where I live, but I got a Prime movie credit from Verizon, and used it to rent the movie.

Side note: The Host is also a great watch. I've also heard good things about Mother, and Snowpiercer has been in my Netflix queue for literal years. I'm gonna get around to it eventually I swear!

Parasite is now one of the six blu-rays I own. Definitely check out Snowpiercer; I don't 100% know your tastes, but from what I know of you, it seems entirely up your alley.

Gotta plug his film Memories of Murder here, a top 3 film for me! Sadly since NEON acquired it they pulled it off all services, but it's supposed to get a new theatrical rerelease this year (35mm at Alamo Draft Houses) and a Blu-Ray after!

Or on someone’s Plex. *cough*

Which version do you have out of curiosity? I was going to pursue a remux of the new French version, but never bothered. I have the Korean BD, which has the same whack ass transfer as the DVD rip linked above, with the wobble during a majority of the cuts. But at this point since I just watched the Korean BD a few months ago, I'll probably wait till NEON drops an official BD with the new transfer, and hopefully see it in theaters here.

I have the Korean BD. I honestly didn't notice the wobble (gate weave?) too much until you pointed it out, but I think that's something I've very accustomed to from old anime DVDs, so it probably didn't even register when I watched it.

The color looks great, though. Much, much better than the shots I've seen of the French BD.

Yeah that was super desaturated, but it does have the improved elements I would anticipate with a new scan, and hopefully no wobble lol, which is why I was curious to try it. You're dead on about old anime transfers having that same effect though.

I'm curious of the province of the new color grade. I think CJ did a huge batch of these at once, because that's what they've been giving out for lots of this era of titles I have this BR of Park Chan-wook's JSA from its 4K scan and it has the same sort of dull flat colors that the French Memories seems to have. I'm hoping fuck up on the BR encode itself, which wouldn't be a first for Bong since the US Mother has screwed up gamma.

Well, I trust Criterion to get it right, at least.

I'd love for them to re-release Mother while they're at it.

I'm psyched for their Memories, and I'll gladly buy again. At that point Bong can have the final word on color.

As for their Parasite — ugh. Very lame to release a bare-bones BR then do another cash grab via Criterion a few months later. IMO the film really needs is an English friendly version of the excellent 4K HDR version, a market Criterion is clearly not interested in. I was hoping for a UHD disc but this pretty much nixes that. Although I'll like buy it for a third time...

Hoping they include the b&w cut.

I'm a few years from requiring 4k/HDR, but Criterion has always been conservative about format shifts.

I think you're dead on about the B&W cut. Curious if you think it's worth watching!

I don't think they're going to do the shift ever. At this point, they're further behind with UHD (3 years out) than they were with BR (they got into it 2 years out). I don't blame them, the QC is harder, the install base is smaller, it's more expensive. Many of their titles are scanned in SDR 2K, and even those that get 4K scans don't have much detail to yield due to the source. Still for something like Parasite the 4K digital looks quite a bit better than the BR, and other countries got proper UHD releases. At this point movies are in the same situation as digital music, where buying a physical version is essentially taking a downgrade in quality for the sake of owning it. Hard choice for those who care about ownership and quality.

Finally caught Parasite last night before it left our neighborhood theater. Sooo freaking good. Wow. After watching The Nightingale earlier this week, I'm well past my quota of devastating cinema for a while. Both are amazing films. Just going to need to balance this all out with some mindless trash. Any recos?

But it’s a comedy...a searing black as midnight comedy but a comedy nonetheless.

The funny thing is, where I live; Parasite had only been playing at the art house theater but since it won Best Picture it has started popping up in the mainstream chain theaters too.
