Neverending Covid-19 Coronavirus

That's what a lot of people like to say, but considering our joke of a response to testing, hard to say even that is true.

Edit: they did seem to test all the famous people we heard about super quick though...
it's a fucking disgrace... there's a doctor who does rounds at the hospital my wife works at who is symptomatic and has been waiting for a test since last Tuesday (March 10th)!!! and this is not an isolated case, she's had other colleagues have to wait over a week for testing.

how/why is there still a shortage on tests, especially for the medical professionals?!?

My sister-in-law (a nurse) had all the symptoms last week and is now feeling better, but they never tested her because she didn't travel or have known contact with someone infected. Of course, if we don't test people, we'll be unable to know who we were with who was actually infected!

Meanwhile Trump is still insisting not everyone should be tested.

It's all a numbers game to make us look better than reality.

it's so frustrating. the president wants everyone to think and believe that there's now an abundance of tests available, and maybe in some areas of the country they are, but my wife's hospital is right outside the epicenter of outbreaks in NY and they don't have adequate tests. logically you would think the hardest hit/densely populated areas would be high priority... although at this point every area should be considered high priority.

Bars and restaurants in Michigan are closing today at 3 pm, some will have take-out available.
I went to a butcher on Saturday and they had about 80% of what they usually do, that may change after ^ this news.^

My boss said this morning that we aren't closing. We're in construction, so working from home isn't an option. So unless a general contractor closes down a job-site (and then that becomes the norm for all/most of the sites) our field guys will continue to work, the shop has been instructed to fabricate pipe, and I have been instructed to buy materials as normal. Business as usual I guess?

I have the privilege of working from the neck up from behind a keyboard in the construction industry and I believe the overall sentiment is that if the field guys aren't still humping it there's nothing for us in the office to actually do. It seems to me that what is going on at this point is a sacrificing of the well being of the actual workforce to keep the office workers paychecks rolling in. Somewhat less sinister but no less dystopian are the contract terms we work under that would require our Owners to execute the shutdowns seeing as the ultimate result is loss of time and deliverable.

Yeah so far we have 1 confirmed case in my county, and he's already recovering. But as far as I know, they haven't tested anyone else. The people he interacted with weren't tested. They were asked if they had symptoms (all didn't apparently) and then were told it's been two weeks since their interaction (they were all at a memorial service together), so they're fine. Those people are all meeting today about it through, so I don't know what's going to happen but I hope they get tested.

I'm stuck at home for two weeks, but it could be shorter depending on what the University says for us childcare employees. Which, by the way, there are tons of childcare centers across this country that are remaining open and nobody is paying attention to those people, likely because they don't know about it. But damn, it really highlights how people view this job. We'll close all schools and even after care at schools, but childcare centers, you can stay open. Nobody realizes how much a burden that puts on them (not to mention some centers in this country are overfilling classrooms, disregarding ratio and allowing school-age kids to come in which is not at all what they should be doing), and how you're in much closer proximity to illnesses than in a normal school system. I understand some people have to work and need someone to take care of their child, but to put further pressure on this already stressful job isn't the right thing to do. These are schools themselves and should be allowed the safety that bigger schools are getting. Early childhood education is not seen as real teaching (but it is). We deserve so much more respect in regards to how we're viewed in the education system as well as how we're viewed just in general society. Maybe all this will open up people's eyes. Maybe we can get a fair wage... hah. Not going to happen.

So anyway... my bosses weren't clear whether or not I was getting paid during this period. I think so? But they haven't directly said, which is a whole other issue here. I've taken up a few babysitting jobs from children in my classroom to make some extra money, help families who need it, and to get out of my apartment. Cause other than that, I haven't left at all since Friday.

Can confirm the same thing is happening with hospitals having to ration masks in Columbus. This is happening even in my wife's Labor and Delivery department.

We pulled our kids from daycare since most (if not all) of the kids who are there have parents in the medical center. I know that kids are not getting sick, but they are just vectors for the spread of the disease. I'm sitting here taking it minute by minute since there's a strong possibility with my wife working in the hospital that she will not come home one night because of a mandatory quarantine or a positive test. A midwife who works in the L&D unit has a suspected case (negative flu, negative strep, and all the hallmark symptoms of COVID).

My office has started taking steps by allowing people to work remotely if they can, although part of my job requires that I am in the office/lab. I can make it work with PTO, working nights and weekends, but having two kids running around makes it hard to get any real work done.

hang in there!! your story sounds very similar to what my wife and I are dealing with. we're thinking of pulling the boys out of daycare at this point just to play it safe (though as foster parents even this is a bit more complicated than it needs to be). my wife also has the possibility of having to be quarantined within her hospital... it's just a huge fucking mess.

Thanks for the support. I have no idea how to handle this stress and neither does my wife. She's scared, rightly so, of just how big this has gotten and how fast is has affected our lives. I know we are lucky we have the means to do what we are doing now with regard to childcare and hunkering down with extra food and supplies. My heart aches for everyone who is in the medical field and is seeing this firsthand. The stories of rationing ventilators is terrifying.

Same for me on this. My wife is a pharmacist at a local hospital. There's probably no way there hasn't been someone there that has it or had it. I'm trying not to worry my head off.

Today's tip I received - health care workers should leave their shoes outside when they come home.

yeah, the stress is already starting to get to us. the fear, worry, and two toddlers without the capacity to understand the situation at hand and defy our insistence on using tissues is making everyone cranky to say the least. I got laid off a few weeks back and it's been a blessing and a curse. I'm home and can watch the boys but still trying to get my unemployment benefits to start and have no idea what the likelihood of finding a new job during all of this. we have savings and support so I'm not in panic mode just yet about that, but it's certainly added to the stress of everything.

ugh... my wife just informed me that the boys' caseworker is now in quarantine after exposure to someone with the virus. this is really just tough for so many people in so many ways.
