New Music Friday!

New Jane's Addiction

post breakup jane's continues to underwhelm, just like reunion porno for pyros, even when doing the old material, they're just.....there. they're competently done, but jfc. old jane's or p4p shows were terrifying, finding yourself in the middle of the floor legit meant you were going home with a bruise and a story at the very very least. the new p4p and jane's stuff is...it's quite pleasant. it's music to turn down a bit when you getto the drive thru to pick up your drink so you don't scare the young lady handing your drink to you. "oh that grandpa is deaf," she would think. "Why else would you play something so mid so very loud?"

July. Some great, some not so great.

🔥
  • Total Blue - Total Blue [my favorite MFM release this year. As if I needed another reason to love this label...]
  • Remi Wolf - Big Ideas [fun pop with a lotta personality]
👍
  • Boldy James, Conductor Williams - Across the Tracks [keeping it steady and keeping it real]
  • Lupe Fiasco - Samurai
  • Patricia Wolf - The Secret Lives of Birds [I will be more than pleased if she can keep creating lovely ambient works of this quality]
🤷‍♂️
  • Denzel Curry - King of the Mischievous South Vol. 2
  • Bartosz Kruczyński - Dreams & Whispers [kinda just a "whatevs" release from Balmat]
  • Lava La Rue - Starface [enjoyable, but absolutely no interest in revisiting]
  • Michael A. Muller - Mirror Music [store brand Gigi Masin; he's collaborated with a different ambient-centric artist for each of the 10 songs here with some recognizable names (Hania Rani, Ilyas Ahmed, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, and others), but none of it really sticks. It's a pleasant background listen, but I was fine before listening, and remain fine after. Also ends unsatisfyingly] {released in Q1}
  • Parlor Greens - In Green We Dream [I dream of something more engaging]
👎
  • Childish Gambino - Bando Stone and the New World [not only are there several jarring instances of genre whiplash, Glover's bars are often cringe. WASHED]
  • Eminem - The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) [not as revolting as Revival, so that's a plus. On the other hand, plenty of out of date, absolute cringe bars like his recent work. Did you like the Luigi's Mansion aura of "Brand New Dance" tho?]
  • Porter Robinson - SMILE! : D [I did not smile]
🤮

None.

The Ween Chocolate & Cheese reissue came out today and I wanted to pick that up since I have a full 20% off stamp card full and some extra cash from selling a bunch of stuff earlier in the week. I knew the new Jack White and new Smile were kinda “surprise” drops today my local didn’t include either on its Thursday night preorder mailer but ho-ly-shit the Venn diagram between Jack White fans and record collectors must be nearly absolute. When I usually go by local on a Friday release day I only have a small window to do so, tied to my morning work break and access to the car before my SO takes it to work, so I time it to where I show up right about the time my local opens at 10 am and today, THERE WAS A LINE OF 20 PEOPLE WAITING TO BUY THE NEW JACK WHITE ALBUM!! Well, maybe like 17 to buy Jack and 3 to buy the new Smile 12” but still. I was surprised. Anyways I talked to one the clerks and though I haven’t yet listened to a single note, I did grab a copy of the Jack White album even though his solo stuff really hasn’t done much for me past. We’ll see how this goes.

Ha! Didn’t expect King Gizz to go full Classic Rock. Those guys keep us on our toes. Seems fun enough don’t know if this is something I will return to often but I admire their chameleon like nature as a band.
It’s my favorite thing from them in quite a while. Probably Fishies was the last one I liked this much.

Gizz being Gizz, that was only five years ago but like 40 releases ago.

No Name was ok. Archbishop Harold Holmes was my favorite track. I did notice some drops in sound quality(streaming) throughout, so I'd be leery of buying the vinyl.
at least to my aging ears, the vinyl sounds way way better than streaming did. there's discernible bass throughout and the vinyl is cut by Bernie Grundman, unlike a lot of Third Man stuff.
