New Music Friday!

Oh man, I just finished streaming this one Stupify and I can't wait for my vinyl to arrive!

At 100 years old, Marshall Allen; the man who has been steering Sun Ra's Arkestra since Sunny and John Gilmore's passings, its longest serving member and there since early days, has just released his debut solo album. And it's wonderful.

Thanks for the share, I enjoyed this 🎧

An RBF for me, released today (although this artist has been putting out music for the last 7 or 8 years), This Won't Be The Last Time by  acloudyskye, has garnered three listens through from me so far.

First listen: meh, it's alright I guess.. but something about it was enough to bring me back two more times so far..

Second listen: this is actually not too bad

Third listen: yeah, this is pretty damn good, and the last 3 tracks are nearly flawless

I can see a lot of people on here enjoying this one.

Well the first new album that I was genuinely anticipating was released today, Horsegirl - Phonetics On and On exceeded my lofty expectations. It woulda been easy for them to just make Versions of Modern Performance, Pt. 2 but instead the took what made their debut record so fantastic and crystallized it down to its essence and then added a bunch more interesting things to the mix. They can still be loud and dissonant but also thoughtful and quiet and unpredictable. Moments caught me off guard throughout and the shifts and hairpin turns are as thrilling as they are unexpected. This is my AOTY going forward but I am hoping the other albums I am excited about can keep up because this just shot out the gates like a rocket.

This was the first album I checked out this morning. Not quite to the levels you did, but I, too, enjoyed it 🎧

Listening 🎧 to it rn and I like it. About what I was expecting from the Cate Le Bon-produced sophomore album.

I don’t listen to as much as some of you anymore. I did get to four new releases yesterday and enjoyed them all very much.

Marshall Allan’s New Dawn was simply delightful.

María Dueña’s Paganini: 24 Caprices is way more interesting than three hours of short violin pieces has any right to be.

Manic Street Preachers - Critical Thinking. I like this a lot, the sort of juxtaposition of the arena rock friendly Manics and the unhinged grimy sound works for me.

The Altons - Heartache in Room 14 is the nice smooth soul I expected it to be. They do not disappoint and I have listened to it a bunch already.

There were several albums from yesterday that I very much enjoyed including ones from Marshal Allen (thanks, @avecigrec ), Horsegirl, and Novarupta. For the numbers folks, I'd give these all a 7 to 7.5 out of 10. Then there were albums from acloudyskye and Richard Dawson, which I would rate just a touch above those three. Overall, a very decent NMF, but not as strong for me as the last several. Still, 2025 is off to a very strong start 🤘

There has been very little of interest for me personally thus far (a few notable exceptions) but the there is plenty of potentially good stuff on the horizon so my hopes for 2025 remain high despite the slow start.

Exactly how I felt about 2024 🤷‍♂️
Last year got off to a slow start for me as well, I had the Ducks, LTD. and Real Estate as the only two released in the first part of the year that finished amongst my top albums of 2024 of but I think March was when the flood gates opened for me last year. I know I am getting a new Momma record and a new The Men record in short order to go along with the killer Horsegirl album. This year will end up fine I’m sure and I am happy people are finding stuff to love. Just not much for me yet.
