New Music Friday!

I'd be remiss not to note that Sarah Jarosz' Blue Heron Suite is out today. This was originally a commissioned, live-only performance at FreshGrass in 2017. She went to the studio with Jeff Picker and Jefferson Hamer in 2018 to functionally record it live-ish and it's just getting released today. The No Depression article about it sums up the sourcing and background really well, it's deeply personal and in my view noticeably different than anything she's done before. The introduction of a heavy guitar sound in the second quarter or so of the piece gives it different dimensions from her other works and the emotional play is really strong in the piece throughout.

I want to call out the Interludes too. They are sublime, perfect transitions between songs. Specifically, Interlude 2 where Picker goes on a solo bass run into Across the Canyon - Reprise is a major standout and smoother than butter.

The Czarface/MF DOOM is exactly what I expected/hoped/wanted from the moment it was announced. Not really any surprise there.

This one, however, I went in mostly blind other than seeing it referenced in a few places leading up to today. 3/4 of the way through and I'm absolutely loving it so far!

I have the St. Vincent, Sons of Kemet, and Sarah Neufeld pre-ordered.
Can't wait for tomorrow!!

Today and 7/30 are the two big release days on my calendar so far this year. Can't wait to check out Jorja Smith, The Black Keys, and St. Vincent! I had on my list that there was a new True Loves album today too, but I can't seem to find it yet. Happy listening!

Edit: and how could I forget J. Cole!

Yes, Yes, I'm calling it now. July 30th should be a day that everyone celebrates this year....

it might also be my birthday, so offerings should be made....
