Alex Ovechkin sustained a lower-body injury during the Washington Capitals' final preseason game Friday and won't return to the contest, the team announced.

The Capitals star appeared to be in pain after awkwardly hitting Philadelphia Flyers forward Travis Konecny midway through the first period. Ovechkin was slow to get up but limped down the tunnel on his own while appearing to favor his left leg.

He didn't return for the remainder of the period, and Washington officially ruled him out at the intermission.

Ovechkin signed a five-year, $47.5-million extension with the Capitals this offseason. The 36-year-old was one of the first three players named to the Russian Olympic Committee's team Friday.

Washington's season officially begins on Wednesday against the New York Rangers.

Guess who's first pick he was?

Also, this entire "controversy" is clearly a fabrication that had nothing to do with Montreal, just to bash on Montreal yet again. Not a single news media in Montreal reported on this.

Max Domi will play far sooner than the Columbus Blue Jackets expected when he suits up for the team's preseason finale.

Domi is in the lineup against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night and will take part in his first 2021-22 exhibition game after undergoing surgery to repair a labral tear in his right shoulder in June.

At the time of Domi's procedure, the Blue Jackets projected he'd need five-to-six months to recover, putting him on track to return by early November or December.

Columbus will open the regular season Thursday against one of Domi's former teams, the Arizona Coyotes. Blue Jackets head coach Brad Larsen hasn't confirmed Domi will play.

The 26-year-old forward struggled in his first season with Columbus, collecting nine goals and 15 assists over 54 games. The club acquired him from the Montreal Canadiens in a trade for winger Josh Anderson last October.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have rewarded head coach Jon Cooper with a three-year contract extension through the 2024-25 season, the team announced Monday.

"Unequivocally, Coop is the best person for the job," general manager Julien BriseBois said. "He is a great leader, spokesperson, and ambassador for our organization. We are lucky to have him as our head coach, and I very much look forward to our continued partnership."

Cooper is the longest-tenured head coach in the league, as he's been at the helm since the 2012-13 campaign. He's led the team to two division titles, three Stanley Cup Final appearances, and two championships.

"It has been a tremendous honor to be the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning for the past eight-plus seasons and I'm looking forward to having the opportunity to build on what we have here," Cooper said. "My family and I love the organization and being a part of the Tampa Bay community, it is our home."

Prior to his promotion to the Lightning, Cooper served as the head coach of the organization's AHL squad, the Syracuse Crunch (and previously the Norfolk Admirals). He guided the Admirals to a Calder Cup title in 2011-12.

Cooper's reputation in league circles is sterling, as the Prince George, British Columbia, native was named the head coach of Canada's men's team for the 2022 Olympics.
