TRADE ALERT 🚨😁

The Pittsburgh Penguins are working to acquire star defenseman Erik Karlsson from the San Jose Sharks in a three-team trade involving the Montreal Canadiens, reports Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Karlsson, 33, paced all defensemen this past season with 25 goals and 101 points while skating in all 82 games for the first time since 2015-16. He also became the first rearguard to hit the 100-point mark since Brian Leetch in 1991-92.

More to come.

👀

So we basically gave away Hoffman and Pitlick to get Matheson for free, have 25% of Petry's salary retained and got at 2nd rounder, DeSmith and Legare on top of that. Not bad, not bad...

I think this is one of those Dubas trades that doesn't really move the needle in any discernable manner in terms of helping the team make the playoffs but will sell some tickets and be fun as hell to watch. Pens lose a defensive defenseman and gain an offensive "defenceman" who scored 101 points last year and was still somehow a minus TWENTY SIX.

Salty Leafs fan 😂

Did Elliot tell you to say that?

Years of watching the Dubas Leafs told me to say that. I think the Leafs and the Pens are just different sides of the same coin. Both teams slowly getting worse and farther away from any championships. In the Leafs case percentage wise it's not much farther away due to the last championship being several years before humans landed on the moon.

I think it's a great trade for Dubas, unloaded several bad contracts and got the Norris trophy winner. I just don't think it makes the Pens much better of a team overall. Much like Dubas's Leafs, I think the Pens need to be torn down.

Valid points, but the tearing down isn’t going to start until the 3 HOFers hang ‘em up.

For the record, I’m not going into this season expecting a deep run or a Cup.
But this trade is going to make me want to watch the Pens this season.

Dubas did a good job on getting rid of some bad contracts by the prior administration. And he has actually given the ol coach a roster for no more excuses.
I still don’t like the duo of inJarry and Ned, but I do like that his contract is movable if needed.

As always Injuries are going to be the key to this season.

On my end, I really like this trade for the Habs. It doesn't make the team better on the ice, but it cleans up a bad contract and most importantly makes space up front for the team to continue to develop. That roster space is really important for the team right now. It's great asset management. DeSmith won't help anything but he's an ok #2-3 goaltender (LOL) that will fit in nicely with the other two #2-3 goaltenders we have. One will go before season starts I think and the team will upgrade when time comes in a few years. Petry remains a tradeable asset (even more so with the retained salary) and I'm pretty sure he's just passing through - though even if he's not, room will be made somehow to play the young D. Legare is just for the farm, which is being retooled heavily. I still can't believe Hughes managed to move Hoffman's contract. And picked-up a 2nd rounder with all that. It's not flashy but it's a win for us.
