Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um

View attachment 146107

First spin (acquired in June last year). Not just that, but my first listen to this album ever. Enjoying this one so far.

This was one of the first jazz albums I really got into and has remained a favourite in the twenty years or so since. When I was a mess before taking stress leave from my old kitchen job and ultimately moving into something else, my wife surprised me by booking us a hot tub boat, which I didn't even know was a thing, and this album was our soundtrack through their waterproof bluetooth speaker strapped to the boat, so now it's got that pretty sweet memory deeply ensconced as well! Glad you were enjoying it so far, hopefully that kept up the rest of the way through!

I paid a lot for a used copy of this then, of course, it got repressed a few months later! Still very glad to have this 3LP box though - an important collection and it was put together by an old co-worker of mine from my few years working at a corporate music store that began in my last few months of high school.

Rae Spoon – My Prairie Home

20220716_214220.jpg

This has me wanting to watch the film for which it's the soundtrack again. Rae is an absolutely wonderful human.

In this feature documentary-musical by Chelsea McMullan, indie singer Rae Spoon takes us on a playful, meditative and at times melancholic journey. Set against majestic images of the infinite expanses of the Canadian Prairies, the film features Spoon crooning about their queer and musical coming of age. Interviews, performances and music sequences reveal Spoon’s inspiring process of building a life of their own, as a trans person and as a musician.

Official selection at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.
