November 2020 Challenge Thread: The End Is Near

Finally got through the Grateful Dead box, so I can catch up with this thread...

Day 9: Great Lyrics

All the pigs are all lined up
I give you all that you want
Take the skin and peel it back
Now doesn't that make you feel better?
The pigs have won tonight
Now they can all sleep soundly
And everything is all right

Day 12: Still Fresh

Blake Mills - Mutable Set

This album is an AOTY contender for me. Blake Mills constructs lush landscapes through this intricate and quiet brilliance. He is an amazing guitarist but is never overtly showy about his talents and his mastery still shines through. Give it a go if you are looking to destress and unwind. This album has been a lifesaver for me throughout our hectic year.

I'm further behind than I thought... I'll do my best to catch up!

Day 4: The Aftermath
The election may or may not be decided. Either way, again, play an album that reflects your mood.

Fontaines D.C. - A Hero's Death (Partisan Records, 2020 First Pressing On 'Stormy Blue' vinyl)

I hadn't heard of these guys until earlier this year and dug them so much that I preordered this album. Fantastic band with a great, unique sound.

Day 10: And Now for Something Completely Different...Pt. II

I don't really collect a lot of music memorabilia so I don't have much that coincides with any particular album.

I do like soundtracks and movies, though. I do have these 2 Phantasm posters. The small one was a free extra in the 2007 DVD release exclusive to Circuit City - 1 in 7 were randomly signed. The bigger one was bought from phactory.co - director Don Coscarelli's official web site produced for the recent remastered version.

Day 11: Veteran's Day

For my dad who was a Marine in the Vietnam War. Was in both battles of Hue and Khe Sanh in 1968 pretty much back to back. He wouldn't talk a lot about his time in the Marines and when he did it was minimal. I wish he would have talked more about it before he died. I don't think he ever really got over or came to terms of his experience there.

I had been buying faster than I could listen earlier this year and a lot of records would get one play and then sit on the shelf. But this one came out in late summer and -along with Waxahatchee and Dua Lipa- has had more turntable time than most this year. It’s a very pleasant album all the way through.

Lizzo- Cuz I Love You

Ok,ok, don't jump all over me, I know this actually came out last year, and this disc is not even mine, it belongs to my Daughter! It's just the latest thing I've got in the house, (note to self - maybe move out of the second-hand section?). I don't care, I really love this album - clever, sassy, terrific voice, but really terrific voice. Love it.

Day 13: World Kindness Day
Play an album from an artist known for their kindness/generosity. Bonus points if they've been kind to you personally.

Dave Matthews Band - Under the Table and Dreaming

Aside from that time his bus dumped a bunch of poop on people, Dave Matthews is a pretty charitable guy. We’ve met several times due to my prior jobs and he was always very kind, and the conversations we had seemed to get kinda bonkers.

Kamasi Washington - The Epic

Kamasi Washington played at the Casa da Musica in 2016, a set of the most blistering intensity. Afterwards, he announced from the stage that the whole band would be downstairs to sign autographs and chat with the audience. I caught a few words with Kamasi when I told him to take care of himself as playing music of that scalding incandescence every night can take so much out of you and he signed mz CD with the simple word "Thanks". Why would he ever have to thank me? His Dad is really cool as well, we had a longer chat about what it was like to work together as father and son.

Kishi Bashi - Sonderlust (Joyful Noise Recordings, 2019 Clear w/ black, white, gold, & bronze splatter, Hand Numbered & Signed by Kishi Bashi)

Kishi Bashi ‎– 151a (Joyful noise Recordings, 2017 Sky-Foam Green Inside Clear Vinyl with White Splatter vinyl)

I decided to share a personal experience today. Its one that I have mentioned here a few times before and involves a gig I went to last year by Kishi Bashi. Kishi is known for walking off the stage into the middle of the crowd to play his encore/final number. This particular venue was super tiny and as Kishi was about to walk off he called me up onto the stage so I had a better view, there was a small child at the front as well and he made sure he was standing on the stage so he could see as well. At the end of the gig I sat on the stage edge to wait for the crowd to leave through the doors at the back. When the last few stragglers began to leave I started heading over and Kishi came through the doors, straight up to me and gave me the setlist, which he then signed. He then called over the rest of the group and Tall Tall Trees (the warm-up act) who all also signed it. Really nice of him and it made the gig extra special.
