November 2020 Challenge Thread: The End Is Near

Day 13: World Kindness Day - Play an album from an artist known for their kindness/generosity. Bonus points if they've been kind to you personally.

Durand Jones & the Indications - Live Vol. 1

I've only ever heard great things about Durand, and the other guys too, and when I saw them in February it proved to be true. We hung out after the show and almost didnt notice Durand walking around the venue talking to fans. I grabbed my record, got him to sign it, and talked about other times we'd seen him among other things. It was a genuine conversation, not just him trying to rush us off to get to the next person and get out of there. Super nice dude!

Back in 2007 Andre 3000 had a show on Cartoon Network - Class of 3000 where his character taught at a performing arts school. That same year he made an appearance at San Diego Comic Con to promote the show. My kids and I went to the panel, and then he signed CD's for everyone. What I remember most was just how patient & genuine he was with everyone that came through the line.

I actually thought about Durand, too! When I saw him live a couple years ago I had a short (and probably for him, awkward 😂) convo with him the bathroom before his set. He was very nice and gracious.

Day 7: Midwest Represent
Play an album from an act that originated in one of the midwestern US states.

I'm a nerd from the Midwest. So this was great to see how each state is represented. Illinois FTW! ( @gafacaode , I didn't know your choice)
So far we have:

Illinois (7):
Charlie Parker & Miles Davis
Chicago
Isotope 217
The Smashing Pumpkins (x2)
Uncle Tupelo
Whitney
Wilco

Indiana (1)
Freddie Hubbard

Kansas (1)
Hyborian

Missouri (1) (Kansas City is in Missouri)
Charlie Parker & Miles Davis

Michigan (3)
bob seager
Dogleg
Stooges

Minnesota (1)
Prince

Ohio (4)
Heartless Bastards
Rahsaan Roland Kirk
Twenty One Pilots
Wussy

So Iowa, Nebraska, North & South Dakota, are not represented, yet. Sadly, I don't have any Killers (Dave Keuning), Weezer (Brian Bell), or Slipknot on vinyl to represent Iowa.

North & South Dakota have slim pickens, too but here is a (small) link to North Dakota.

Mine was Siamese Dream from The Smashing Pumpkins.

Boy, I'm way behind. Catch-up posts coming up!

Day 9: Great Lyrics
Play an album that's notable for its great lyrics.

🎶
Misshapes, mistakes, misfits
Raised on a diet of broken biscuits, oh
We don't look the same as you
And we don't do the things you do
But we live around here, too, oh really
Misshapes, mistakes, misfits
We'd like to go to town but we can't risk it, oh
'Cause they just wanna keep us out
You could end up with a smack in the mouth
Just for standing out, now, really
Brothers, sisters, can't you see?
The future's owned by you and me
There won't be fighting in the street
They think they've got us beat
But revenge is going to be so sweet, oh-oh-oh
We're making a move, we're making it now
We're coming out of the sidelines
Just put your hands up, it's a raid, yeah
We want your homes, we want your lives
We want the things you won't allow us
We won't use guns, we won't use bombs
We'll use the one thing we've got more of
That's our minds
Check your lucky numbers
That much money could drag you under, oh
What's the point in being rich
If you can't think what to do with it?
'Cause you're so bleeding thick
Oh, we weren't supposed to be
We learnt too much at school
Now we can't help but see
That the future that you've got mapped out
Is nothing much to shout about, oh-oh-oh
We're making a move, we're making it now
We're coming out of the sidelines
Just put your hands up, it's a raid, yeah
We want your homes, we want your lives
We want the things you won't allow us
We won't use guns, we won't use bombs
We'll use the one thing we've got more of
That's our minds
And brothers, sisters, can't you see?
The future's owned by you and me
There won't be fighting in the street
They think they've got us beat
But revenge is gonna be so sweet
We're making a move, we're making it now
We're coming out of the sidelines
Just put your hands up, it's a raid, yeah
We want your homes, we want your lives
We want the things you won't allow us
We won't use guns, we won't use bombs
We'll use the one thing we've got more of
That's our minds, yeah
And that's our minds, yeah🎶

The whole album has great lyrics but Mis-Shapes still speaks to me. Jarvis knows my soul.

Day 8: Sound-Track Sunday
Play an album that that includes a track that's prominently featured in a film soundtrack.

How about a whole album of instantly recognized film tracks...

John Williams, The London Symphony Orchestra ‎– John Williams: A Life In Music

PXL_20201113_214450945.jpgPXL_20201113_214425413.jpg

And after listening to the whole record, I realized why these movies' soundtracks all kind of sounded the same! LOL

Day 13: World Kindness Day

I was struggling with this one because I’ve never met any of the artists in my record collection so I don’t really have a clue of what they’re like as people (outside of some of the major assholes), but I remembered this story from April...

That’s pretty generous, right?

Taylor Swift - Lover

Day 14: Every Other Day Is A-hole Day?

Mark Kozelek & Jimmy LaValle - Perils From the Sea

2EA6E411-9B30-4A48-9596-7A2BC3EA22C5.jpeg

I should clarify that I’m sure Jimmy LaValle is a nice guy. Mark Kozelek, however, continued to grow into a cranky, gross old man. This was one of his last albums where he’s actually singing and it’s pretty beautiful.

Day 14: Every Other Day Is A-hole Day?

Yep...he's an asshole, but I do still like most of his music.

Day 14 - Every Other Day Is A-hole Day?

I’ll go with freshly crowned asshole Van Morrison. I would have hoped that someone with his means and influence would be doing everything he could to keep his fans safe from Covid, but somehow it’s just the opposite.

Day 14: Every Other Day Is A-hole Day? - If there's a special kindness day, I guess that means every other day is asshole day. Play something from a noted asshole. Bonus points if they've been an asshole to you personally.

Brand New - Deja Entendu

Jesse Lacey was a well known ass hole BEFORE he was accused of sexual misconduct recently. "I believe in the equality and autonomy of all, but in my life I have been more of a detriment to these ideals than an advocate.” (Brand New Cancel Tour After Singer Apologizes for Sexual Misconduct With Underaged Fans).

Chet Baker, Art Pepper - Playboys

I kind of have a problem with this one, because it involves me working on hearsay: also, lots of people who made great art weren't always careful of the feelings of those around them. However, Chet Baker seems to have been a rather nasty piece of work, by all accounts, although the music is terrific and isn't that what we're here for? Not an easy challenge, roll on tomorrow.

Let's listen to Middle Passage by Ginger Baker. The album has the characteristic aesthetic of a Bill Laswell production from 1990 on Axiom with Nicky Skopelitis, Jonas Hellborg, Jah Wohble and Bernie Worrell but in addition we can enjoy musicians I'm otherwise unfamiliar with including percussionists Aiyb Dieng, Magette Fall, Mar Gueye and a woodwinds from Omar Faruk Tekbilek.
