November 2020 Challenge Thread: The End Is Near

Day 3: Election Day 🇺🇸
Play an album that's quintessentially American.

Johnny Cash - Johnny Cash at San Quentin

What is more American than country music, men being incarcerated, and country songs about men being incarcerated?

San Quentin what good do you think you do? Do you think I'll be different when you're through?

Day 4: The Aftermath
The election may or may not be decided. Either way, again, play an album that reflects your mood.

Marilyn Manson - We Are Chaos

After seeing how many people saw the events of the last 4 years and thought "Yup. That was great. More of that, please!" then proceeded to vote for the "obese turtle on his back flailing at the sun", I really felt deflated. I truly thought that the only way the election was even going to be close was by cheating, rigging, and manipulation. But, people came out in droves to vote for the "Fuck you, I got mine" party. So maybe Mr. Manson was correct....

We are sick
Fucked up and complicated
We are chaos
We can't be cured

Day 5: Guy Fawkes Day
Play an album by a revolutionary artist.

Eric B. & Rakim - Paid In Full

The artist that created the whole idea of the Lyricist in Hip Hop. Rakim took being an MC to another level and forged the mold for all that came after him. From Nas to Tupac to Jay-Z to Eminem. They all use the style that Rakim created.

Pull out your money pull out your cut. Pull up a chair & I'mma tear shit up.

Day 6: Adolphe Sax's Birthday
Play an album that features the saxophone.

Merlin - The Mortal

I was tempted to make this another Bruce post, but I'll branch out this time. RIP Clarence.

If you are in the mood for Progressive Stoner-Doom then look no further. The album art may remind you of Dark Souls, but the music will remind you of that one time you were at a stop-light and the guy to the left was playing King Crimson, the guy to the right was playing
Pink Floyd, and the guy in front of you was playing some Acid King.....all at MAX FUCKING VOLUME with their windows down. The saxophone isn't just one of those instruments in the background that you can kind of pick out on a couple songs if you listen close enough; it shares center stage with the guitar and, at times, outshines it.

You are a wizard of nothing!

Day 5: Guy Fawkes Day

If you didn't grow up in the 80's, you may not understand how HUGE he was. He was odd, but popular. He wasn't in the weird recluse period yet.

I had a summer job in 1988 reading fan mail for a few celebrities, Michael was one of them. He really was huge at the time, the volume of mail from around the world was amazing.

Day 6: Adolphe Sax's Birthday

Tubby Hayes - Tubbs (Fontana, 1961 First Mono Pressing)

Heck of a lot I could have chosen today, a big portion of my record collection has saxophones in them. I decided to fly the British flag and play this killer from Tubby Hayes. Hayes was born just down the road from where I now live and I can even see (in the distance) the first club he ever played at from the window of my apartment. I love this album as it shows him in both a small group and big band sent up, with some incredibly lyrical playing and deep, throaty tone.

Day 7: Midwest Represent
Play an album from an act that originated in one of the midwestern US states.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk - We Free Kings

Hailing from Columbus Ohio Rahsaan Roland Kirk was one of the great originals. There's still a lot of his output that I'm still looking for and when I first step into a record shop, its the "R" segment I head for first. I'm also going to put a youtube video up here of a live performance of "Cabin in the Sky" from I think Italian television. When I've had a crap day at work, this is what I put on my headphones for the walk back.
Tomorrow's post will not be all about the Saxophone, promise....

At the time I was quite impressed with the general aesthetic and the approach to composition and ensemble playing. That was fresh and it still makes sense and I'd like to play in a band working that way. But over time, as with Tortoise, my interest moved on. Listening now the album sounds a bit anemic.

Day 7: Midwest Represent

Charlie Parker & Miles Davis - Grande Réserve Savoy N°4 (Savoy Records, 1959 First French Pressing)

How about a double whammy (I think these are in the midwest anyway) with Chalie Parker (from Kansas City) and Miles Davis (from Illinois)!

Is that appliance an accessory to playing records?
