November 2020 Challenge Thread: The End Is Near

Day 8: Sound-Track Sunday
Play an album that that includes a track that's prominently featured in a film soundtrack.

Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Song: “God Only Knows”
(Boogie Nights)

In high school Boogie Nights blew my mind. If I owned a Night Ranger album, I’d play it instead, as the “Sister Christian” scene is a cinematic masterpiece in itself, but this song plays over one of the final scenes of the film, which really wraps it up well.

Spoilers ahead:

Baby Driver Soundtrack

Decided to do you one better and play an entire film soundtrack instead of just one song from a movie soundtrack. Love this one as the music is such an important and heavily incorporated part of the movie!

Day 9: Great Lyrics
Play an album that's notable for its great lyrics.

Most Of The Time - Bob Dylan

Most of the time
I'm clear focused all around
Most of the time
I can keep both feet on the ground
I can follow the path
I can read the signs
Stay right with it
When the road unwinds
I can handle whatever
I stumble upon
I don't even notice
She's gone
Most of the time
Most of the time
It's well understood
Most of the time
I wouldn't change it if I could
I can make it all match up
I can hold my own
I can deal with the situation
Right down to the bone
I can survive,
And I can endure
And I don't even think
About her
Most of the time
Most of the time
My head is on straight
Most of the time
I'm strong enough not to hate
I don't build up illusion
'till it makes me sick
I ain't afraid of confusion
No matter how thick
I can smile in the face
Of mankind
Don't even remember
What her lips felt like on mine
Most of the time
Most of the time
She ain't even in my mind
I wouldn't know her if I saw her
She's that far behind
Most of the time
I can't even be sure
If she was ever with me
Or if I was ever with her
Most of the time
I'm halfway content
Most of the time
I know exactly where it all went
I don't cheat on myself
I don't run and hide
Hide from the feelings
That are buried inside
I don't compromise
And I don't pretend
I don't even care
If I ever see her again
Most of the time

Bob Dylan - Oh Mercy

Day 9: Great Lyrics
Play an album that's notable for its great lyrics.

Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly

I can't possibly do justice to how fast and fleeting these lyrics snatch up impressions and turn them into sounds. This is a high water mark, as far as I'm concerned.DSCN0108.JPG

Day 9: Great Lyrics
Play an album that's notable for its great lyrics.
Lyrics aren't my bailiwick. Music is the most abstract of the arts and I think that's got a lot to do with my attraction to it. Poetry has always been a struggle for me – I keep trying but don't I really get it.

So I suggest we listen to The B-52's first album the B-52's. I can safely say that the lyrics to, for example, Rock Lobster are, to me, the B's knees.

And for bonus video today, let's enjoy this live performance of that awesome song.

Dig the kids in the front row with their period SLRs! I hadn't noticed them before.

Jason Isbell's story is pretty well known at this point, but I first became aware of him with the Drive~By Truckers in the mid 2000's. Songs like Outfit, Decoration Day, Danko/Manuel were all evidence of how great a songwriter he was. He has plenty of great songs on his solo albums after he left the DBT's as well.

With Southeastern though, he turned the lens on himself & his behavior, and brought a level of introspection and honesty to his lyrics and delivery. The leadoff track off Southeastern, Cover Me Up, signaled this with his telling of alcoholism & rehab intertwined with his relationship with his wife.

"Put your faith to the test when I tore off your dress
In Richmond on high
But I sobered up and I swore off that stuff
Forever this time
And the old lover's sing
"I thought it'd be me who helped him get home"
But home was a dream
One I'd never seen till you came along"

That album is too good. ❤️

Day 05: Guy Fawkes Day
Play an album by a revolutionary artist.
Stereolab - Mars Audiac Quintet

Stereolab musically sound like cocktail hour at a retro futuristic space age bachelor pad but the lyrics to many of their tunes are straight up Marxist.

Day 07: Midwest Represent
Play an album from an act that originated in one of the midwestern US states
Whitney - Light Upon The Lake

Born and raised in Central Illinois. I needed to show some home state pride. I have been all in on Chicago Indie darling’s Whitney since their previous (and much more rambunctious) band, Smith Westerns broke up.

This was the album I was thinking of when I thought of this topic. Glad someone played it!

Day 08: Sound-Track Sunday
Play an album that that includes a track that's prominently featured in a film soundtrack.
Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Akira Symphonic Suite
D1B027FA-B8D6-48C0-AC7A-EBE5E28D81DB.jpeg

Akira is hands down favorite anime/manga ever. It’s wild that so much bonkers stuff could come from one very prolific creator, Katsuhiro Otomo. Besides the soundtrack, which is epic and awesome within its own right, I have included the 35 anniversary Boxset which includes hardbound copies of all six volumes plus additional artwork. Also, above that are 2 of the 6 original Japanese volumes (I hope to acquire the other 4 at point).

Day 9 - Great Lyrics

John balanced social commentary and humor so well. One of the most engaging lyricists there was - I already miss him a ton. Thankfully, Phoebe Bridgers seems to be picking up where John left off.

I know this just got a new reissue, but I couldn’t bring myself to replace this copy.
