Pour yourself a big bowl of Cap’n Crunch and hunker down for the best part of the week as a kid. Spin a record that has cartoony elements.

Big Brother And The Holding Company "Cheap Thrills"
(1968 CBS; 1973 Canadian pressing)
Robert Crumb is not really Saturday morning cartoon fare, but fuck it, I'm 51 now. I can take it.

Play something that could be your ring entrance music.

Bo Baral (The Poets of Rhythm) "Funky Sex Machine" (2005 Tramp Records)
My entrance song is still this. I have to maintain my branding. My fans expect nothing less. Makes for a good follow-up to all those 45's I posted yesterday. I had actually missed this one for the photo with all of the other Poets Of Rhythm records.

Guster - Lost & Gone Forever

High School in the late 90s was a weird time for me from a musical standpoint. Junior High in the Early 90s and College in the early 2000s made a lot more sense. By the time I got to high school in 96 the Alternative scene that I was all about in the early part of the decade had lost a lot of steam and what was coming in behind it was Pure Pop, Rap Metal, and Hip-Hop dominated by Puff Daddy and Eminem. None of that appealed to me as high schooler I spent most of my time exploring Classic Rock until eventually being introduced to Dave Matthews Band. While I own love love for DMB I will say I spent most of my upperclassmen years listening to way too much Dave. My love for DMB also led me to other groups that travelled within the same sphere or agreeable bands that you could smoke weed to and were great live. Guster was one of those groups. I would say outside of DMB, Guster was probably the band we saw perform live the most.

Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights

After graduating and heading off to school my interest in DMB and more Jam based artists began to wane. At the same time a friend introduced me to pirchforkmedia.com (that was back when pitchfork.com was still some sort of farming website) and I started exploring the new “Indie Rock” Hipster type music that was growing in popularity at the turn of the century. At the time the big ones were The Strokes, The White Stripes, Ryan Adams, and Interpol.

One of the standout tracks on this album is the Underdog. Underdog also happens to be my all time favorite cartoon, and I named my dog Polly after Underdog's girlfriend Sweet Polly Purebread.

Saturday Morning cartoons were my favorite thing as a kid. I would wake up as early as possible so I could get in as much cartoon time as I could before my family would get up and start giving me chores to do. Lord Quas is the cartoon alter ego of Madlib. I don’t think he woulda worked well as a Saturday morning cartoon since it would be a cartoon about smoking weed but then again I would make an excellent Adult Swim cartoon.

An absolutely perfect Saturday though would mean I’d be able to catch some WWF Superstars after lunch. This has more than a couple tracks that would make fantastic walk out music but I would probably go with the obvious, “Walk This Way”

Nirvana – Nirvana

Kurt died pretty early in my high school days but I was definitely a geek about Nirvana all throughout high school - they were the first thing I ever looked up on the internet and I cut my last class the day From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah was released in order to travel across town from my second high school to my first and meet up with a friend to go buy our copies that afternoon.

Nina Simone – Pastel Blues
20221126_133552.jpg

After I dropped out of college I went to live with my dad for the first time ever. A buddy and I would regularly make mixtapes then head out late at night to hotbox his car and drive around rural Alberta listening to the tapes. He put on an all Nina mix one night. I was enjoying it right out the gate but I lost my goddamn mind when it got to the handclapping segment of "Sinnerman," which remains one of my all-time favourite recordings of any genre ever.

Since I don't have Air's Moon Safari on vinyl, this will provide a suitable back-up as I do have MANY ounces, and a lot of it bounces.

"Sexy Boy" would be top notch entrance music, though maybe a bit too close to The Heartbreak Kid's walkout track.

Fun Fact: Initially Scary Sheri Martel sung the Shawn Michael's entrance song but once she was no longer his Valet, He rerecorded the track with Michaels himself singing the track.

Play something that was a little freaky and/or geeking that you enjoyed in High School

If you knew me in High School in the mid-80's, there were likely one of two bands on my walkman. Oingo Boingo or Madness - being in marching band definitely made the bands with horn sections stand out to me (and put me squarely in the Freaks & Geeks club). Plus something about Madness describing day to day life in England was able to craft a vision very different than my Southern California upbringing.

This album was where Our House first appeared, and if you haven't heard it enough it was also used for a Maxwell House commercial.
