November Challenge Thread: All-Stars Edition!

Time to get caught up...

Day 4: @waruv gave us the June 2022 challenge based on Taylor Swift. Mrs. ImTheOcean is traveling to Vancouver in December to see the last night of Taylors tour.
  • Play an artist that you have traveled (or would travel to, given the opportunity) go see.
Well, the planets just happen to be aligned. I'm having a long-distance listening party with @Mather on this one and it happens to be my most recent travel show.

1. Drive 4 hours.
2. Eat dinner and see a blazing rock and roll show with @Hemotep.
3. Drive 4 hours.
4. Consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.

Such a killer album, just unreal.

Day 5: @D Jilla hosted November 2020 when the US last had a presidential election. I think we’ve learned the last few years that its important to use your voice.
  • Play something pointedly political, or by someone who has used their voice for change.
Gonna go with an incredibly important under the radar artist for this one.

Tom Robinson has always been a champion of the oppressed as well as being one of the first openly gay musical artists. He put it all out there in 1977. He has absolutely no fear. Tom's music revolves around eroding human rights and standing up for the marginalized. He deserves so much more recognition than he gets.

Three songs from this record.

PSA: the first video uses the N word spoken in character by someone who minimizes African-Americans.

Tom doesn't attempt to hide his anger and disdain in the second clip.

The third clip is just a fun, rocking song.

If this is your introduction to Tom Robinson, I encourage you to dig deeper and channel his strength and passion for the next four years.

Day 6: @Hemotep ran last months challenge, (in)famous for its use of Crumhorns and Shwams. I won’t be that cruel, but will take it as a start.
  • Play an album that features an unusual instrument.
I know of exactly one musician who played a two-string bass with a slide. He's been gone a mind blowing 25 years and I miss him every damn day.

Thanks for everything, Mark...

Morphine - The Night

The Old 97s - Drag It Up
IMG_0842.jpeg

I have never explicitly traveled too far of a distance to see a band perform. Most the shows I went to were regional either in the Midwest or PNW. I have seen The Old 97s three times all while still living back in in Illinois, once in Bloomington, once in Champaign the third time we had actually road tripped across the country to the Pacific Northwest for a vacation and while in Seattle we saw that The Old 97s were playing at the Showbox by Pike Place and decided to attend (a pre “hey ho” Lumineers opened for them). So you could say we travelled over 1,500 miles to see an Old 97s show and that wouldn’t necessarily be untrue.

Day 7: I ran the November 2021 thread, based on Neil Young lyrics. I gotta go with the day 31 prompt on this for obvious reasons:
  • “I’m The Ocean, I’m the giant undertow” – Play something with a great guitar riff, or involving the ocean
Taking @Yer Ol' Uncle D s lead, gonna go with my namesake, but acoustic.

Neil Young ~ Before and After

And thankful I got to hear it live:

Gang of Four - Entertainment!

Opening riff from "Ether" is post-punk immortality. Same for many others off this record, like with the follow-up track "Natural's Not It" using just two chords.

Long obsessed with Stroh Violins, apparently Jeff has found a Stroh Viola, as he is credited with playing one here.
I was expecting The Horse from you! But this is pretty cool.
