Online Vinyl Deals

I don't know if it's been mentioned here but it sounds like Barnes and Noble have brought back their 50% off sale on select titles. In-store only, I believe.
I don't think it's in-store only, but I do know it's possible to shop your local store(s) online with the "purchase-and-pick-up" option. A possibly more efficient way of knowing what you'll find.

thanks for this. i wouldn't have known otherwise. finally time to give some of their jazz reissues a whirl and see if they're worth a damn.
A bunch of their jazz reissues are just reusing OJC plates as far as I know. Some are craft recordings. Just look into the reissue label. I'm pretty sure Newbury doesn't do any of their own remasters or plating.

@MikeH is right. Most of them are just Original Jazz Classic reissues that they press on colored vinyl. No remasters or plating. Most of these OJC titles can be found elsewhere on black vinyl in the $12-18 range, rather than the $25+ range for the colored Newbury versions.

Granted, when they had a 25% off sale in the past, I picked up a bunch of the NB exclusive OJC pressings of Miles Davis albums, a Coltrane, etc. They all sound pretty excellent, though the plant pressing them varies considerably. For instance, the Miles Davis "Relaxin" on clear vinyl was pressed at RTI, it's flawless. The OJC Wes Montgomery exclusives from Newbury are lower quality, as I believe they came out of United or Rainbo. Look on discogs for info.

I too have been eyeing that Monk with Rollins album, but that style of color pressing is notoriously noisy from my experience. So I am passing for now.

I remember when I ordered the VMP x Prestige exclusives, I was wondering why they were all pressed at different plants and was told that different places had different plates + rights to repress, so that's probably why the Newbury stuff is pressed all over the place and sound quality is everywhere. FWIW, Rainbo is no longer in business though so...hopefully their newer pressings are okay quality. I agree though--check on discogs for more info re: pressing as the Newbury albums are ALL over the place.

Yeah, I found that out early on and luckily was able to avoid any bad pressings by doing just that. I'm pretty certain they do not do any remastering jobs themselves at all so every release is basically just a prettier variant of an already available release. The nice thing about this is once you find out what release they're piggy backing on you can usually find some info on the quality even if nobody has commented on that exact newbury variant. They usually pick the best plates available but sometimes even the best plates are still not very good.

right, and from what i was able to research, fairly decent represses. a couple are still a mystery as no owners have bothered to enter any real details on discogs, but i'm willing to take a gamble.

sonny rollins appears to once again be a repress of the DCC and that sounds excellent.

If Saxophone Colossus is the same master as the VMP one it does sound great. Some are worth the gamble. Others, as @zdkaiser said are the same pressings as the OJCs which are typically cheaper than Newbury.

I have the OJC of Saxaphone Coll., it is the DCC pressing, so the NB variant is likely the same. It is one of the best sounding records in my collection. I bought the black vinyl version for $14 online. I'm sure the NB version will sound excellent as well

Note:. The red Sonny Rollins Tenor Madness -- which you can still find in store -- is the Hoffman/Gray. I've got it and it's solid.
