Political Discussion

In semi related news, New York City's congestion fees when it comes to traffic tolls went into effect.

Boston is looking to follow with a proposed similarly structured congestion tolling fee.

The goal of the increased tolls is to funnel people into using public transportation instead of driving.

However, based on initial reports coming out of NYC, the increased tolls so far have not changed peoples behavior. It has only annoyed/aggravated some people, but for the most part, most everyone that was driving into the city before is still driving into the city. For one reason or another, while they could take public transportation, they don't.

The proposal of bringing the same tolling structure to Boston is a political hot point. It's not popular. And has a lot of people bitching about "Taxachusetts" and why people are leaving the state.

Pretty early to make such statements about a measure that is 5 days old
Yeah, it's still too early to know.

My guess it will take time to see how much this does actually influence peoples behavior. So far, based on one traffic report I saw, the daily traffic coming into the city has not changed in the initial couple of days this has been in place.

Knowing it would be in place, if people even paid attention and knew hasn't changed their behavior yet. But maybe time and paying higher tolls will.

Mileage may vary, but my friends in NY seem to like it; I've seen folks on instagram post pictures of unbusy (well, for downtown NYC) streets. Most people in the city itself are quick to point out the only people driving into the city at those times are trucks/shipping and folks conducting business. All conjecture, but I've yet to hear someone complaining about congestion pricing who lives and/or works in the city.

Classmate from grad school

I can't believe the insurance rug pull these fuckers have been able to get away with. At a certain point what reason will there be to pay these guys?

Truly a horrible bad luck timing situation that was not their fault.

The Pasadena fires over the pandemic were when I realized I needed to hit eject on LA. Thankfully, my closest of friends have been spared, thus far. Other than a buddy who lost his childhood home. His dad is famous architect who helped build the Venice boardwalk though so they will be okay. Farasai wasn't a close friend-- he's an African immigrant and I was too eccentric for him. But he is a good person. And more importantly, I have admiration for anyone who managed to hustle to the point of being able to cement California as home.

I don't like Newsome, but the fact that this is getting spun about anything other than the realities of climate change makes my blood boil. The fact that insurance companies are, again, fucking people over makes my blood boil. And more importantly, my heart just aches for the city.

15 years of my life and no regrets... well maybe a touch in regards to the student loans. People can talk all the smack they want, few cities are as welcoming towards people whose souls are a bit outside of the norm. It was the perfect place to find myself as an adult, and I love Los Angeles... both the good and the bad...

I just hope they prevent the Eaton fire from hoping the highway into Burbank. Because at that point, the whole city would be at risk. And that the friends in Minrovia wind up spared. Sounds like that area was just downgraded, thank goodness.

This kinda stuff makes me so mad. Got Canada helping people out and some idiot is flying a drone over restricted airspace.

Hummm.... first thought about our CL-415's being in California is how this is happening despite the orange fuck lobbing threats at us and saying we contribute nothing.

Anyway, hope we can keep this thing in check. Really glad they're there - we have some of the best wildfire fighting teams in the world.
