Political Discussion

The USPS is still a mess after the Christmas rush.

The Springfield MA facility holds any record shipments coming my way for at least 10 days before it moves again. 23 days is their record in December.

This is just insane and mind boggling to me.
After I had packages shipped via USPS take 3 weeks to get to family I’ve been shipping with UPS. Went from 3 weeks to 3 days to ship the same distance. I won’t ship USPS for a while because it’s unreliable currently.

Seems a bit unfair to USPS, really. Media Mail is the lowest priority thing they carry. I'm not trying to say much more than if you pay for something like Priority Mail there's no such delays. They're clearly still able to meet their actual obligations of which media mail is limited to simply being delivered eventually.

And covid has exponentially increased parcel volumes due to online shopping and it’s only 2 or 3 months since your then toddler in chief was vandalising it for political gain. I’m kinda impressed that you’re all getting some post!

I love USPS and almost exclusively would use it. When it was Christmas gifts I wanted to get to family on time it was worth it. All the items that took longer that I shipped earlier didn’t get lost, just took ages which at the end of the day is the main thing. As long as it gets there eventually.

They’ve been missing shipping dates on every other kind of mail I’ve sent too.

Interesting read on Slate analyzing Trump propaganda and Nazi propaganda - I found the dog whistles in the Jan 6 rally video (Hollywood sign, Schumer and other prominent Jewish political leaders, EU/UN to evoke global elite) to be of particular note.

Seriously, this is some Fascist shit. You could swap out Trump for Mussolini and not miss a beat.

Yeah I posted about this a few pages back. It’s wild.

Meanwhile at Amazon....

Amazon recently told employees at its DCH1 warehouse in Chicago it was closing the facility down. DCH1 has been the site of protests and walkouts. It’s also the home of DCH1 Amazonians United, an advocacy group that has successfully petitioned the company for things like paid time off for part-time workers. According to Motherboard, the company reportedly gave employees two options: they could either take on 10-hour “megacycle” shifts at other facilities, or they could find a new job.

Megacycle shifts are a relatively recent development at Amazon’s delivery stations. They see the company’s warehouse employees work for 10-hours straight in graveyard shifts that usually start in the early hours of the morning and end around lunchtime. Amazon told Motherboard more than half of its last-mile delivery network is already on the model. In moving to the new model, Amazon has also reportedly been phasing out the shorter shifts it offered as an option to its workers previously, a claim the company disputes.

There should be severe penalties for this kind of bullshit. Also they should have a large windfall tax bill off the back of a pandemic making them billions.

I've seen priority mail shipments (not my own to be clear) experience delays beyond quoted times and USPS does quote 2-8 days shipping time for media mail on their website still. I think there's a reasonable argument they're not meeting their agreed upon timeframes (I have a media mail item that is at about 40 days with two inquiries "in transit" still).

With that said, I agree with the larger point in that it's the lowest priority mail and in situations like the present (staffing wiped out due to COVID, holiday backup still in effect, etc.) anyone shipping or receiving something via media mail should adjust their expectations to "getting it". i know I've been paying the extra for priority when the option arises and if I were a seller I'd probably insist on it unless the buyer made it explicitly clear media was okay.

Seriously, y'all? Seriously? $60K stimulus check caps, because $50K is too austere, but $75K will break our economy....this makes no sense. There is no data that supports this.

Speaking with CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union," Yellen indicated that she thought individual Americans earning $60,000 per year ought to be eligible for the direct payments, a higher figure than the one identified by senators such as Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who has called for the payments to phase out at the $50,000-per-year income level.

"So, you definitely think higher than $50,000 per individual, but you're not necessarily willing to commit to $75,000, is what I'm hearing?" Tapper asked, referring to the level at which payments were phased out in the package passed in December.

"Yes," the secretary responded. "I think the details can be worked out. And the president is certainly willing to work with Congress to find a good structure for these payments.”

Didn't we try this already? Things that we shouldn't link with employment: Healthcare, housing, and education.

I live down the street from Steinway Village. Basically they built it away from Manhattan because it was the epicenter of the labor movement.

If it wasn’t clear before, the fact that these companies think they can replace the government as “providers” of these basic needs is all the evidence you need to know that they aren’t being taxed enough/at all.
