Political Discussion

I don't own any guns and don't really get the gun culture in this state but there was a bit of a panic about a possible increase in violence when concealed carry and open carry were passed here in Texas and it didn't happen. Yes, we have terrible mass shootings but not the random daily violence people thought might happen after those were passed. I rarely see any open carry people. I know the various police associations around the state aren't really thrilled with permitless carry though.
I just wish training was a requirement nationwide. it's the open + permitless + no background check on top of zero education requirements for possession that got me deep sighing my way back to bed.

just been a whole session of the TXlege trying to cram horrific shit through, so I've barely batted an eye at this one. they are fighting to make sure I don't have a say over my own body, ensuring voting is more difficult, aiming to punish cities for setting budgets Governor Shitweasel doesn't like, criminalizing homelessness statewide, and quelling educators who might discuss critical race theory.

I can't help how much I love this land and so many of the people that reside here, but GADDAMN. their priorities are fucking shameful.

You mean "unabridged"?
you are not wrong- that's what that means, but I believe the reason Renegade quoted it as such is because this is being called the "permitless carry bill" here in Texas.

a move to unlicensed, no background check, no training, open carry. I believe there are another 20-odd states that have unregulated carry, so this isn't that unusual, I just wish there was still a process for proficiency and education requirements to carry. I am glad they ended up adding on amendments that restricted permitless carry for those convicted of domestic violence and assault.

I've been trying to follow the conversation here about community and urban/ rural divide here. I think there have been some good points made.

I also think that so many of the perspectives people have around this stuff is driven and influenced by their political affiliations and their expectations they have for life based on where they choose to live and their personal values. I've mostly lived in cities for my adult life. I've spent some periods of time, months at a time, in rural to off the grid places living and working.

Community exists in a lot of different forms and those forms manifest for a lot of different reasons. I've experienced both friendly community oriented neighbors and others who want to be left alone. In cities I think community takes several forms because they tend to be more culturally heterogeneous and there are just more people in the jurisdictions (in-general). So the community interaction may take place in the form of an HOA or a neighborhood association or a club or a cultural activity. Some of these activities may not exist or exist differently in rural communities.

I think these perceptions that people have about people in the city or people in the country acting, behaving, or living in certain ways are almost always the sorts of generalizations that don't reflect the reality for most, and often more about personal expectations than any kind of truth. I guess what I'm getting at is that there isn't one way to define community and it's pretty useless to expect that anyone else, certainly those that live culturally different lives than us, share our expectations for community, and these expectations are what the culture war narratives pray on.

Yup, I'm not visiting Texas anytime soon.

Texas lawmakers sent a bill to the Governor's desk today that changes gun carrying laws to "permitless". It is expected to be signed into law.
Then you’re also not visiting:

Or any one of the 30 states (there is overlap with the above list) in yellow in this image that don’t require a permit to open carry a handgun.

I don’t know what that is, but I gather it’s Texas BBQ so I don’t care. 😂😂

Forreals tho, to address a point @bfly made, while I believe it is absolutely the responsibility of anyone who chooses to carry a firearm to get training and practice regularly. That said, I can’t support a requirement for training or state licensure. I view self defense as a human right, and that means having the tools to effectively defend yourself from those that wish to do you harm. Therefore I place permits on the same level as poll tests to vote.

Do you think that if a brown note laser became commercially available as a non-lethal alternative to firearms for self-defense, would the risk of mass shittings result in that weapon being more or less regulated than guns?

For my money I think a lot of people would rather risk death than humiliation. Despite the non-lethality of uncontrollable pooping, I bet there would be no problem for most people in establishing various legal barriers to access and ownership.
I didn’t even know what the hell you were on about here until I looked it up.

I’m not most people.

Regardless of the fantastical nature of a hypothetical device that doesn’t exist, I’m not of the view that the government has any business in the business of regulating arms. Whether it’s a gun that shoots bullets or the uncontrollable urge to shit, it’s none of the government’s business what I choose to own. It only becomes their business if I use it in an unjust manner to violate another person’s life, liberty, or property.

Being from a Northern State I don’t have a dog in this fight but I think Urban/Rural division and Gun Legislation are likely much less contentious topics over what region has the best BBQ.

For the record I love all versions of slow cooked meats and will gladly help eat barbecue from all parts of the country.
Did I tell you about how I got roped into being a BBQ judge for a couple years? It was a volunteer position but you never went home hungry.

In the example above this outfit was one of this girls go to outfits for school. She has worn it to school on many occasions and has never been questioned by any staff that the outfit might be a violation of dress code. But when it comes to wearing it for her yearbook photo. It was deemed to by a violation of dress code and immodest and therefore digitally altered.

80 students had their yearbook photos edited in total. All 80 of the portraits edited were girls and they all had their chest covered up more.

The article goes on to talk about how dress codes are antiquated and how girls are target to protect "boys from being boys". It also talks about how these dress codes shame girls in a time of their life where they are going through being body shamed and most susceptible to these types of comments / messages.
