Political Discussion

Hot take, maybe. I'd rather Florida Butthead be the attorney general than RFK be in charge of health or that white supremacist be in charge of DoD or the Hindu fascist in charge of intelligence.

AG is such a visible position and you know that dork knob will very publicly fuck it up and it'll put Republicans on the defensive having to defend someone they don't even like.

The others can do major damage behind the scenes that will be a lot harder for the media to successfully illuminate for the public.

It's not like Trump will suddenly pick an AG who isn't a gigantic shit, so I'd rather that one be someone who's so dumb that he will fail spectacularly.

It's wild how some of these appointments are giving me a faint glimmer of hope that this cabinet will be so chock-full of jokers that they won't get anything done. Like they might not total the country so much as joy-ride it into a ditch.

The local news just had an interesting story on the cost of living and rent.

New York City recently passed a requirement that landlords have to pay their own brokers fees instead of passing them along to renters.

Now people are calling for the same to be done in Boston, which is one of the most expensive if not the most expensive city to live in these days in the United States.

However, as always, law makers in Boston or the state are overwhelmingly against this just like they are against rent control. I don't see it ever happening in this state. Currently, law makers say they are against it because land lords would just pass on the brokers fee with hire rent further increasing the affordability issue. They say the solution is zoning changes so that more housing can be built.

But zoning doesn't work in MA because zoning changes require a super majority vote from the local zoning board according to state law. And for the past 20 years we have found that the vocal minority has been effectively able to block any changes to allow for affordable housing to be built or average priced apartment buildings. Always the same story about fearing increases in crime, loss of property values and change in community dynamics. Only high end ultra luxury developments have primarily been approved over the last 20 years.

Currently in Boston, more than 70% of landlords pass the Brokers Fee along to renters. And these fees can be thousands of dollars on top of first months rent and the security deposit required to move in. Some landlords even require last months rent on top of all of this. This means you may need more than $10,000 cash on hand to move into an apartment.

What do we all thing about the idea of having landlords pay their own brokers fees?

I feel like someone else posted this earlier but I can’t find it and I really want to comment on it

I just don’t understand this. Other minority groups I can kinda understand voting for him because he lied and said he would be better for him. But at no point did Trump even to attempt to paint himself as anything other than 100% pro Israel. I get not supporting Harris if Gaza is your main issue but in what blizzaro world are you living in where Trump would be better for you on that issue. That’s not a misinformation issue or a believing his lies thing. He is telling you he wants to turn Gaza into a parking lot, you voting for him, and then being upset when he starts making moves to turn Gaza into a parking lot. Truly idiotic and I find it hard to feel any sympathy for you if you vote against yourself like that

This is why I yelled and hollered in this thread about the fact that the war in Israel was no where near as bad as it could get.

A good number of us said this would be the case. Well, I guess just me and Lee as far as I can recall. But we're all screwed now in this new reality.

Not a lot to laugh about it lately but this was funny.

Haha, love it.

Not only did the wealthiest get wealthier since Trump got elected, but I have also seen a lot of people saying that Trump has done more in one week already than "Harris" did in 4 years. Was that mentioned here already, I can't remember.

Also, why are they saying Harris and not Biden.

I guess this is possibly the best news we could get at this point in time about how things turned out with the election.

With the republicans having a very thin margin of control in the house and voters keeping the status quo will the house be able to do anything productive or will they continue the trend of being the least productive house session in modern history.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they can't pass anything and continue to get in their own way.

Well one of the most impactful ads was the "Kamala is for they/them and Trump is for 'we'". So in that regard, woke was an issue the right seized on. One issue I had with Kamala was she shied away from saying why she was for something like transgender rights or why sometimes there needs to be late term abortion because of medical issues where the mother might die or the baby isn't viable. Instead those attacks went unanswered and it cost her.

In a way you're right (a response would have been needed, because none didn't work), but in retrospect, I also think that ad was strong because to the people it resonated with, it was symbolic of the entire "woke" movement, whatever they perceive of it anyway, and a shortcut to saying that the Democrats are too far left. Any response by the Democrats would have had to be very well crafted to not further just confirm to these people that they are too far left. I'm sure there was something to be done, just not sure what it could have been. Basically, I'm saying many responses would have likely backfired.

Though it's an argument I keep hearing over and over from the establishment that is the Democratic Party. Especially those who consider themselves "center".
It’s certainly a talking point. Republicans had a very effective anti-woke ad. Dems didn’t run on it. It’s two different things. They should be talking about what an effective counter to the ad was.
