Political Discussion

Hot take, maybe. I'd rather Florida Butthead be the attorney general than RFK be in charge of health or that white supremacist be in charge of DoD or the Hindu fascist in charge of intelligence.

AG is such a visible position and you know that dork knob will very publicly fuck it up and it'll put Republicans on the defensive having to defend someone they don't even like.

The others can do major damage behind the scenes that will be a lot harder for the media to successfully illuminate for the public.

It's not like Trump will suddenly pick an AG who isn't a gigantic shit, so I'd rather that one be someone who's so dumb that he will fail spectacularly.

It's wild how some of these appointments are giving me a faint glimmer of hope that this cabinet will be so chock-full of jokers that they won't get anything done. Like they might not total the country so much as joy-ride it into a ditch.

The local news just had an interesting story on the cost of living and rent.

New York City recently passed a requirement that landlords have to pay their own brokers fees instead of passing them along to renters.

Now people are calling for the same to be done in Boston, which is one of the most expensive if not the most expensive city to live in these days in the United States.

However, as always, law makers in Boston or the state are overwhelmingly against this just like they are against rent control. I don't see it ever happening in this state. Currently, law makers say they are against it because land lords would just pass on the brokers fee with hire rent further increasing the affordability issue. They say the solution is zoning changes so that more housing can be built.

But zoning doesn't work in MA because zoning changes require a super majority vote from the local zoning board according to state law. And for the past 20 years we have found that the vocal minority has been effectively able to block any changes to allow for affordable housing to be built or average priced apartment buildings. Always the same story about fearing increases in crime, loss of property values and change in community dynamics. Only high end ultra luxury developments have primarily been approved over the last 20 years.

Currently in Boston, more than 70% of landlords pass the Brokers Fee along to renters. And these fees can be thousands of dollars on top of first months rent and the security deposit required to move in. Some landlords even require last months rent on top of all of this. This means you may need more than $10,000 cash on hand to move into an apartment.

What do we all thing about the idea of having landlords pay their own brokers fees?

I feel like it's a giant game of 3 card monte...
