Political Discussion

You’re not alone. I wasn’t quite mentally in the place for WWIII off the back of 2 years of the plague.
I am not ready for any of this. Sending virtual hugs from this side of the pond.
Don't forget climate change, cause you know, everybody is.
I haven't forgotten about that. I've been getting strawberries from my people at the farmer's market for over a month. That means it's been warm enough for strawberries to grow in February this year. We also just got in some blackberries, which again, February, y'all. This has a ton of impact on storms as well if we are already this hot.

As well as the recent magnetic anomalies that suggest the magnetic poles might be reversing

From the article:

Previous studies had not found much of an environmental impact from the flip. But that conclusion was based primarily on ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica, which biased it toward higher latitudes. Cooper and his colleagues took more representative samples from all over the world, including from tree rings in New Zealand. They conclude that the magnetic reversal was in fact related to the extinction of a large fraction of large animals at the time, as well as the disappearance of the Neanderthals and even the appearance of cave art.

They go on to say that mass extinction could never happen to humans, but they don't give great reasons why, which makes me think that this could also kill us or things we rely on for food.

My father just had home heating oil delivered today. Said the price is up 35¢ a gallon today since making the delivery appointment yesterday.

He's furious. Blame the "clown" in the white house. lol. Says the cost is up by more than $2.50 a gallon since Trump was in office.

Me, I just ignored what my father had to say and worry about all those Americans living paycheck to paycheck and if they are going to be able to afford to heat their homes.

Those with money will have no issues surviving. Those without will be in a world of hurt. Yes, food shortages will kill humans, those who are at a economic disadvantage.

Those with money can insulate themselves, but radiation from the sun is radiation from the sun. The myth that someone could build a fortress to survive planetary annihilation is laughable. We're all on this boat together.

True but there has to be more than 2 horses in the race. His foreign policy gaffes this year have been catastrophic beyond belief, even before he cemented himself in history as s Putin appeaser.
pick your horse here

I would never have thought that Russa's Elite would have owned the largest superyachts in the world. And it appears governments are seizing them if their owners are Putin supporters and have sanctions against them.

Pissing off oligarchs is cool, but then wtf are these governments supposed to do with these things? Auction them off to...other people with ill-begotten mega wealth?

Granted, a lot of the yachts in this link are not owned by Russians, but just look at them! The extravagance is so disgusting that it doubles back around to being difficult to comprehend. Waterfalls! Submarines! Gardens! Double helipads! Secret owners! Private hospitals! "A snow room that can make up to four inches of snow!" I don't even know what that means!

The moral of the story is that maybe no one should be allowed to be this wealthy.

Been checking this site on and off for a little over a week. Gives some of the minutiae of what's happening on the ground in Ukraine and the world, relating to the war - plotted out on a map. The information is always accompanied with the source so you can decide how much weight/credibility to give to it.

From what I understand, this was started by Ukrainians to share information during the Crimean conflict and they kept it going to monitor different conflicts since.

Anyway, it's also kind of depressing to have everything laid out like that, so I try to go only sporadically. But at the same time, it's important to try to understand what they are going through.

Not sure I understand what is going on here, but it appears Fort Lauderdale brought in a new police chief to address issues of racial discrimination in hiring and promotion practices that lead to an majority white police force with the command staff being virtually all white.

The new police chief basically did what every corporation is doing with Diversity & Inclusion trying to hire and promote minorities so that the force isn't so overwhelmingly white.

And then he was fired for doing that because these practices discriminate against white people...

Does that about sum this up?

Well, here is a direct assault against public transportation in New Hampshire.

It looks like things are finally moving forwards with returning commuter rail service between Manchester New Hampshire and Boston for the first time since the 1970s. This is badly needed because because the one highway that connects these regions is is a bottleneck and a parking lot nearly 24 hours a day heading into Boston. A lot of people commute from Manchester New Hampshire and its suburbs to Boston due to housing affordability. Simply put, they can't afford to live close to Boston but their jobs are in Boston.

Federal Grants will pay for the entire project. From upgrading signals, crossings, safety features like PTC and replacing the rails and ballast for higher speed operation. All new hampshire would need to do is fund the subsidised tickets.

Just went it looks like they cleared all the roadblocks republicans introduced HB1432 which prohibits state funds from being used for passenger rail. This bill is to be voted on on March 10th and has a lot of Republican support. With New Hampshire being mostly rural the majority of its house of representatives are republicans and this bill will likely pass.

There opposition to passenger rail is that "It's a 19th century technology" and that "New Hampshire people don't like to share space". Share space as in sitting next to a stranger on a seat within the train.

The commuter rail service ended in the 1970s because New Hampshire stopped paying to subsidize the service and expected Massachusetts to cover it as the people from New Hampshire were commuting to Boston after all.

Surprisingly I have not heard the argument that the funds should not be used for rail because they only benefit a few community where the money should be used to maintain roads and bridges across the state that will benefit more communities. I think this argument dropped off after it became clear federal funds could be used for everything but the subsidies.

You are correct on it's provenance. There is an app as well, I believe. They're pretty good about including filters for current events - e.g. they had a filter for U.S. police shootings and civil unrest a while back.
