Political Discussion

I also heard a soundbite on NPR news where Bidden said "It's not going to happen" in a response to protesters demands that we stop funding Israel.

There was also a soundbite from a police chief in I think Austin Texas. Along with blaming protesters for damage (where protesters countered and said all the damage was done by police), the main point the police chief was trying to make was that you are delusional if you think that these protests and damaging property will have any impact on federal policy or the war in Gaza and that these protests are pointless and illegal.

But hey, at least Biden and this police chief didn't say anything as bad as this:

I'd like to throw Cotton from a bridge.

One of the things I heard NPR talking about, is this year's college graduates is the same class who saw their high school graduations canceled in 2020 due to covid. Now they are seeing their college graduations canceled due to protests.

The start of last nights episode of John Oliver was all about these college protests. And how politicians, like Biden are condemning them as not being peaceful. Violence, damage to property, canceled classes and graduations are not peaceful and you don't have a right to protest in that way. I pretty much feel, there is no way to protest that Biden would consider peaceful and legal.

But as John Oliver points out. All the violence and property damage is either being done by police, or counter protesters.

Who are these counter protesters, and why does it seem any political protest as of late draws them out. Have they always been an issue, or is this a relatively new occurrence, at least on the scale that we are seeing it in recent years.

Class and graduation cancellations are not happening because of the peaceful student sit ins, they are happening because of the massive, militarized police presence the sit ins have drawn. And any violence or damage not being caused by police is being caused by counter protesters.

I believe it was at Columbia, but John Oliver mentioned a case where a 63 year old professor of Jewish studies was thrown on the ground by police for no apparent reason. What threat did she pose and why was that kind of force needed? She's Jewish herself, isn't she just who the police are supposedly there to protect? Instead, it seams the police are using violence against people like her.

NPR was also talking about how these college protests are a huge issue for the democratic party. As big of an issue if not bigger an issue than abortion is for the Republicans. Democrats are losing younger voters over their actions and response. And older voters over the fact that they are not doing enough to stop these protests and keeping the peace. There is a clear devision amount generations and what they expect.

The main story of last nights episode of John Oliver was about public libraries and the book ban movement.

It is within the publics right to contest books in a public libraries collection. And up until recently, contesting of books was rare, only done by individuals and were often about one single book a particular parent made that their child read.

We have seen the number of requests to contest books skyrocket, are mostly done by religions and non profit organizations and the number of books listed being contested by a single request now exceeds 100 books in the majority of cases.

We have seen several libraries move children's picture books about farting to the adult section of the library as well as anatomy and puberty related books for teens due to local and/or state laws banning any books with any sexual obscenities in them from being accessible to minors.

We have seen bomb threats against libraries and death threats against librarians. Librarians are being called pedophiles and accused of indoctrinating children. Laws have been proposed in several states that would make it a felony for librarians to have books in the library that are sexually obscene / not appropriate for children.

Political ads and organizations are electing pro book ban people to library boards across the country, and these boards all to often vote to fire the library director or librarians over contested books. Which in many cases, the library does not even have, or are already in the adult only section.

Having a book in the adult only section, or relocating a book to the adult only section isn't enough for many of these organizations. They are looking for the complete removal of the books to protect children. As a child could still get their hands on it in the adult section and be exposed to these obscenities according to them.

One city voted to defund their library over books they were concerned about being present, most of which didn't even exist in the library, and then were surprised when the library said it would have to close and angry.

The first link just went to a timeline instead of story. But MIT and Harvard are threatening involuntarily eviction of students conducting sit in protests. Students will face suspension or explosion if they have to be removed by police. Police clear out student protesters at UC-San Diego this morning, dozens arrested.

I know, but this dude has really turned into a poopy head
This just seems like exactly the kind of person/politician he's always been. And Trump is still worse by a mile. I'd rather volunteer to eat a shit sandwich than have to vote for either of them. But if Trump wins there's a good chance a lot of us will be forced to eat shit sandwiches.

If Harris wasn't his VP then I'd say our best bet would be Biden winning and dying of old age immediately after. But she's worse than he is when it comes to policy and her only advantage is that she's not too old to think most days.

Hearing testimony of a porn stars encounter with the ex Republican President during a hush money trial is something I never thought would ever hear. Never mind the dude will probably be re-elected. You seriously couldn't make this shit up if you tried.

Not to mention that if Trump violates the gag order to make a political point, and gets arrested, it only helps his reelection chances.

That's just if not more crazy when you think about it.

Pure scum

Why is it impossible for leadership to have a honest conversation about what the Israel government is doing to the people of Gaza. Anti-Semitism is a problem but to paint Gaza protestors as ant-semites does a great disservice to the discourse. Hamas committed horrific acts on October 7th. None of that justifies the horrific acts the Israeli government is having their military commit against the people of Gaza using US supplied weapons.

And that’s really the issue isn’t it? It’s easier just to call protestors anti-Semitic and conflate the Israeli government with with Jewish people by in large than to actually acknowledge that the US government is enabling the Israeli government to indiscriminately kill tens of thousands of Palestinians. The sad part is, with the help of the mainstream media framing; this tactic will probably work at influencing the majority of the uninformed masses.

They're invested in it monetarily. On top of Israel being the capital on western imperialist interest in the middle east, AIPAC, weapons manufacturers, and media conglomerates are making politicians money. Biden has made more money from AIPAC than any other politicians.

Not to mention decades of propaganda to seal in public support for the former. It used to be you just had to believe everything the Times said cus that's all there was. Now anybody with a phone, a conscious and half a brain cell can figure out they and everybody surrounding them are completely full of shit in minutes.
