Pre-Order Thread

My brethren! I thought for sure I was committing social suicide by fessing up to my general apathy towards her music. I keep telling myself, “ELTON JOHN LOVES HER” as if that means I need to enjoy her music, but then I realize.... I DONT EVEN LIKE ELTON JOHN THAT MUCH!
Not liking Phoebe is fine. She's hit or miss for me.

But not liking Elton John...

If you've come to Elton in the past 20 years, maybe I could see it. But if you've been there for his first 10-15 albums, well, he's a fucking rock star! And the Elton John/Berni Taupin pairing is legendary in my book.

But I will say I think that in addition to many things related to the music itself, the time in your life when you come upon it really makes a difference.

I see this happening more and more lately...a lot of smaller places put up releases before they are supposed to in what seems like an effort to get a bunch of cash before other shops release info/preorders.
I don’t think it’s intentional. I think these shops just pay more attention (because they have the time) and hop on the email and release db updates before others.

Might be, but I thought most of these places are told when they are allowed to release info. That VinylMnky place does it a LOT on reddit--they post release info before they are supposed to, sell a bunch of preorder copies and then say "oh sorry! we weren't meant to leak it!" I'm sure not everybody is guilty of that, but it seems to happen quite a lot with that VinylMnky place in particular...haven't really heard of Indie Vinyl Den or whatever their name is!

Agree with ya. I grew up listening to Elton since my parents both love him. Their first dance at their wedding was to "Your Song". Neither of them are particularly into music but they have probably seen Elton 20 times in concert. They were at his show at MSG when John Lennon came out to perform with him and it was Lennon's last public performance. Elton, Queen and Zeppelin all have a special place in my heart since my parents played them on every single road trip we went on as a kid.

I mean is it even a hot take that he never had a truly great album? Isn't he kind of known for being a bit uneven album wise? I've heard that from people who like him. I guess just saying I'm surprised to see people surprised. Personally, I love some songs but am very meh overall on him.

Hammerbox, a female-fronted "grunge" band from Seattle in the early 90's (they were more than that to me, and many of their fans, but a simple enough explanation)

I help my friend run the label, and when he was going through lead singer Carrie's garage for merch to sell at the Goodness album release show (Carrie's band after Hammerbox), he came across some old reels - Hammerbox songs that had never been released

2 previously-unreleased Hammerbox songs on 7", plus a bonus digital-only alternate take on Under the Moon
Saw Hammerbox a number of times, love Carrie's voice! Been looking to pick an album or two up.

This. Love some songs, would love a greatest hits. But yeah, it’s like a 1 to 6 ratio for me and I like my greats to have a 5 to 6 ratio. But also, I can understand and respect the importance when put into context of impact to the industry... I can’t relate to that aspect.

I like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road alright but I think it is a prime example of a double album that could be much better served as a single.

It's true he's not had a single great album....He's had a multitude of them. Take your pick between Elton John, Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across the Water, Honky Chateau, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and Captain Fantastic just for starters. Not saying every single song on every one of these albums is perfect, but there are more than enough that are to lift them to classic status. He may not be for everyone, but then who is?

Most of the time if a release is embargoed it says on the sheet when it can be announced for sale. Selling stuff before the official street date is a *major* no-no. When I ran a shop in the 90s, if you did shit like that you could lose release-day titles for a quarter, a year, or longer depending on the label/distributor. If the release Db gets updated and they send an embargo email that arrives after the update goes through, that’s where you run into problems.

I think it's my favorite of his, but for me it's kind of bloated, but I'm certainly not trying to say anyone who loves it or him is wrong. I haven't revisited many of his earlier albums in full in quite a while either. Sorry for turning this into the hot takes thread.
It's all good. Really gets me to thinking about how a "great" album is defined, and I guess consensus is really the only unarguable way it can happen. So let's be grateful for subjectivity!
