already sold out. but once again Hip-Hop picture disc vinyl pricing has infected the rock scene

let's not forget the main rationale: it will sell out, all the time, every time.

Of course it will, because they have a fanbase, but I've also purchased silkscreen prints for that much without records, so I can understand the potential value from that standpoint.

That being said, this picture disc is bullshit. I still wasn't seeing any direct correlation to hip hop pic disc pricing, though. Isn't this the only variant they've released for this thing? I just saw this as a move to collect on the rabid nature of Tool's specific fanbase and their laziness in not offering a regular pressing of this thing because it's easier to just make new packaging when the novelty has been working for them, especially with some novelty ass bundle like this one.

Edit:

I was reading it wrong and thought the disc came with new packaging and a slipcase. This release actually has very little to do with Lateralus or the pic disc, at all; it looks like the same old pressing that's been in and out of print for the last 16 years. So, they're charging for putting a second cover on their magazine and offering this issue in a slipcase. That's what they're selling. The print and record (which can be find elsewhere) is how they're trying to rationalize buying 2 copies of the magazine.

There are already bajillion different variants announce with probably more on the way. What’s 80 when added to the other 2,000 “limited” color pressings?

Yes, the increased number of variants has made me far less interested in acquiring any variant. I was asking for confirmation because this aspect of the Big Red Machine rollout seems like a new gimmick – doing one variant pressing of just 80 discs – even within the exploding variant climate, so it was surprising. And indeed, there has since been confirmation from their CS that the green splatter was limited to 80 total copies, 40 in US, and 40 in UK.

I didn't even preorder this, since I need to hear more music to make my decision.

The variant explosion has been a real money saver for me, since it has seriously decreased my FOMO and preordering. It does make me feel bad for completionists, as it seems to prey on them.

Right on! I am in the exact same place. Once the smoke from the FOMO frenzy clears there will probably still be a colored pressing available at a reasonable price and if not I can grab it on black.

Seems like they went from no variants on the first album to all the variants on the second one. I'm glad I'm a SS member so the variant was chosen for me.

I don't know. It was a throwaway comment that hip-hop is the only genre I am currently aware of that has embraced the picture disc as a frequent, and expensive, variant.

So, really all Tool needs to do is simply press Lateralus on black vinyl. The picture disc is already mastered by Chris Bellman, so it has the potential to sound really good. Just don't make it a picture disc.
