Pre-Order Thread

I’m not sure what happened these last few weeks/months/years, but I finally feel burned out on this goofy hobby that just gets more and more expensive and silly every day. I think I’m out, you guys
Yea I can’t keep up with all the new releases. I try to limit any new purchases. But then I also find myself on eBay a bunch trying to get some older high quality pressings. Getting a digital streaming setup helps a lot to curb my new vinyl purchasing.

I get that entirely. I've rapidly gone from having a lot of pre-orders out to only pre-ordering my must have artists or albums I know I'll love because I can stream them in advance. The pricing is pretty extreme too. I recently ordered a long-term "grail" if you will on Discogs and got it the other day. Had a Newbury Comics price-sticker on it from like 12 years ago of...$17.99. For an audiophile level 2 LP (not MoFi/AP but high quality pressing). The same artist just put out a very similar album this year (live performance, 2 LP) and it's nearly twice that at Newbury right now.

I'm still having fun going to stores or thrifty places and trying to find some weird, new stuff to enjoy or great deals but the online ordering / pre-order experience is no longer that for me.

Definitely agree on this. I've been trying to do a full listen to any album on digital before I commit to buy on vinyl unless it's a band I'm really into. It's helped me cut down significantly on albums that I know I won't spin enough to justify. And I wait for the big sales (10-20% off rarely is enough to justify it imo). The whole manufactured limited bs is just a marketing ploy to create fomo in us and make us into mindless consumers. But like you all I got into this hobby cause of the music. Not the limited editions. Some good talk on the Dead thread about how the live shows are often more enjoyable on cd/digital anyway. And that's the truth. It's hard not to get caught up in it all, but it's a lot of fun to stop buying and enjoy what we already have too. Lots of forgotten gems in our collections I bet.

I just find myself limiting to what I really need now a days. All of these preorders can def. be overwhelming if someone is not

I've been out for the past year tbh. I'd recommend just buying new artists you really love, the occasional blind one that you think will reinvigorate your passion for the hobby, and pick 1 or 2 artists to become a completionist for (within reason), to kinda keep your foot in the game. After all that, if you still aren't enjoying it, you can tap out. This is how I'm trying to prevent myself from getting burnt out. I no longer get 3-5 boxes a week, now it's just 1-2 a month. It also makes actually going to a record store that much more refreshing. Good luck.
I was going to say something similar to @Melt Face Molly Drop. 4-5 years ago I'd be buying up a lot of releases, but now I'm more selective of everything. Do I need a fancy color edition? I've been giving everything a solid listen before I commit to buying anything. And if I do eventually buy something I've been just grabbing the plain black edition for like $20 rather than tracking down the OOS limited version on Discogs or whatever for way more. It's not worth it.

I've been burned too often buying an album I end up not liking because it was from an artist I previously enjoyed. Also the prices on albums has been insane which does not make impulse purchases any easier.

That’s what I do as well (with new releases; I’ll often take a chance on cheap used vinyl without sampling it first). The main thing to come to terms with is the FOMO on an exclusive variant. Personally I don’t pay much attention to color variants, because the music sounds the same (or better) on black vinyl and I don’t care about resale value. Despite all that, I’m also a bit sour on the hobby right now.

New Vince Staples limited pressing. Appears to be /2000, and around 800 left.

This was posted over in the Hip Hop thread, but I'm guessing there are some folks here who don't check that regularly and might be interested:

I used to follow the hip hop thread, but I can only only handle one thread that updates 10-20 times a day. So I chose this one instead.

I really need a good pressing of Miami. I should note that the press release from Blixa Records touts these as digitally remastered. I’ll wait to see what the reviews look like. At any rate, Fire of Love is absolutely essential and Miami isn’t too far behind.

The pace and volume of releases/pre-orders can be really overwhelming. Only recently have I really looked at what I listen to and so much on the shelf I just never take out. Made a decision to only buy/keep what I know I will spin and really shoot for quality over quantity. I feel as though buying more and more doesn’t allow me to truly appreciate the gems I have.

This got a VMP pressing for those that don’t care where it comes from. It’s also priced fairly similar to this one.

Oh yeah, I recall tracks from this on your playlist. I ordered from VMP, but still waiting on it...
