All That You Can't Leave Behind is pretty high up there on the list (which I'm making up now) of most lopsided albums. The first 6 songs (Side A) are all pretty great, and the last 5 (Side B) are all pretty awful. If I owned this on vinyl, I would enjoy all of Side A and rarely ever listen to side B.

It’s the percussion & guitar rhythms mostly, I think. Spoon uses brass in that song where Joel uses an organ; the melodies are different but they’re producing a similar effect. Not doo-wop though, I don’t think. And you almost have to ignore the vocals completely in order to make the comparison at all.

Vocals is where I was getting a little Elvis Costello (not just this song). Doo-wop was probably a stretch and I think I subconsciously threw that in there to rile up the Spoon base, given how notoriously passionate they are.
