Dang it y’all. I’m listening to this Lil Yachty album and I am loving it.
I applaud his efforts to attempt something different. I support any musician taking a big swing even if they end up whiffing. Unfortunately, His auto tuned singing doesn’t do much for me when paired with some Pink Floyd cover band riffs. It’s was an interesting listen but not entertaining enough to likely revisit.

What if I told you this was a chillwave record that came out too late? Does that change your mind about his vocals? 🙂

Soul Step Records are proud to announce the debut 45 from Nasvhille’s own Westwood Avenue. Joining Soul Step and Westwood Avenue on this 45 is Erin Rae on the A-Side, “Bachelorette Screams.”

Westwood Avenue consists of Ryan Jennings from Teddy & The Rough Riders, who have put out music on Third Man Records and Appalachian Record Company and Carter Brallier of the renowned Santa’s Ice Cold Pickers that hold court at the legendary Santa’s Pub in Nashville, TN.

Westwood Avenue grew up together here in Music City, USA on the street that they named their group after and the tunes on their debut release revolves around growing up in Nashville and how much the city has changed in the past 20 years into what it is today.
The A-Side is the cult smash “Bachelorette Screams” about the boys & girls that roam Broadway every night and the shenanigans that follow. “Tennessee,” the B-side is all about the state they have spent their lives residing in.

There will be a limited to 100 Pink Cowboy Hat variant in addition to the standard black vinyl. Soul Step Records highly encourages fans to sign up to be a Soul Step Subscriber for free, as most of our limited edition vinyl sell out before it goes on sale to the general public.

Not really. For the record I’ve never really understood the appeal of Tame Impala either, which is another noteworthy reference here. Adding psychedelic stylings to hip-hop is a cool concept. I know beyond Childish Gambino, ASAP Rocky and The Flatbush Zombies have flirted with the concept with some success.

I would be lying if I said that I didn’t find the idea of a rapper who typically makes poppy trap i
hip hop making a Pink Floyd inspired album highly intriguing. Initially, I was shocked by just how much he went for it as I listened to the first couple tracks but ultimate once the shock and awe of the unexpected wore off by the end of the album, I just found the whole thing kind of boring. I almost wish he would have incorporated more rap verses into the music and maybe had a rap producer take the initial production and cut it up a bit similarly to what Makaya McCraven or Jeff Parker do with some of their Jazz releases. Maybe then I would have enjoyed it a bit more? Ultimately, it felt to me more like a typical psych rock record that was devoid of hooks.

Lots of positive reviews, maybe I need to revisit it when I am in a different state of mind. As of my first listen though it didn’t do much for me.
